so before i continue messing can we make this work without that package?

anybody know of an easy GUI that we can install on our desktop to connect to KVM ?

or  gui to install on unraid to easily install an ubuntu VM ?

Realistically beta 1 will be missing stuff as can be seen for requests for additions in beta 2 already.

I expect beta 2 to be a better starting point

I did manage to get things working, but lost track of all the deps I had to install by the end. I'll just wait for beta2 before I start getting seriously involved.  8)

Are qemu package needed any longer? I used it on 5.0.4 32bit , and have to install 40+ packages and some symlinks to fix this, I did a install of qemu yesterday on unRAID 64bit, and is started same as 32 bit with a lot of missing lib files, so I assume there will be even more package involved if we are going to use QEMU/VDE packaged, BUT maybe is enough with libvirt to manage all passtroug/VM ...... ?

Yes. KVM and Xen.

A lot of work needs to be done on Tom's end and a Guide for KVM and Xen for users when done.

Those of you who have gotten a VM running, can someone send an email/message to Tom explaining what he needs to do, so he can add all the additional packages and other things needed to the next beta? :)

As much grief as some of the users here have given me... I'm letting others pick up the torch and run with it.

I will provide feedback / input and I even made suggestions on what the community should do.

1. A group of users should focus on Xen and create a dedicated thread.

2. A group of users should focus on KVM and create a dedicated thread.

3. Produce a Xen Kernel and the package. Less moving parts (it combines everything into a kernel and a package), it's easier to maintain / upgrade (another reason why Enterprises use it aside from the Enterprise features it has that KVM doesn't).

4. Both Xen and KVM need a network bridge. Better figure out what that is / how to do it in each and get Tom focused on this now.

5. In each thread start documenting what needs to go into the guide / bzroot / bzimage / etc. (secretagent identified some of the KVM stuff that needs symbolic links or what a plugin would need to edit).

6. Draw straws and see who is in charge of producing the final guide.

Until that happens I cannot really add much because I am not leading either the KVM or Xen effort.

Summary of changes from 6.0-beta1 to 6.0-beta2

----------------------------------------------

- linux: added some legacy PATA support:

CONFIG_PATA_AMD: support for the AMD and NVidia PATA interfaces found on the chipsets for Athlon/Athlon64.

CONFIG_PATA_ATIIXP: support for the ATI ATA interfaces found on the many ATI chipsets.

CONFIG_PATA_OLDPIIX: support for early PIIX PATA support.

CONFIG_PATA_PDC2027X: support for Promise PATA pdc20268 to pdc20277 host adapters.

CONFIG_PATA_VIA: support for the VIA PATA interfaces found on the many VIA chipsets.

- slack: added missing library: libtasn1

- vsftp: fixed

- webGui: updated to 2014.01.24a to fix issue with updating

I assume a LOT more needs to be added/changed for Xen/KVM to work out of the box.

Yes. Libvirt is broken out the box, there's no network bridge out the box and many other things. As soon as tom reaches out to me again I'll supply him with a list.

with all the best will in the world, no! it will be much better to get a proper guide out when it's ready and not leave tidbits hanging around the forum for n00bs to try in 6 months.

not sure how you think Tom should contact you?

In my eyes it is US who need Tom to do something for us ?

so i guess a better way of accomplishing the new beta release would be for you to send the list to Tom and ask if he can add those packages?

I know i know i am OLD but that's how i was educated ....  ::)

recent beta makes this easier.
