hi all, i have a 20 drive array with about 10 shares.  all shares (except one) are set to use all disks based on high water.

 

the one exception (comics) is set to 'include' only one disk.  i find it faster to just spin up one disk instead of having tons of small files over 20 disks.  overall its working well, i've had it setup this way about 2 years.

 

just noticed that my comics share is set to 'include' disk 18 (the sole drive) however i did not set the other shares to 'exclude disk 18'.  in browsing through the hard drives, i can see though that comics are on disk 18, and no other disks, which is correct.  as well, my other 9 shares are not storing data on disk 18 even though its not excluded which again is what i want.

 

so i guess my question is, if you want a share to reside on only one drive, do you have to exclude it from all other shares?  my disk 18 is getting full so i'm going to add a second drive to the comics share (disk 19) so i will add disk 19 to the 'include' box, but then should i go back and add disk 18 and 19 to all other shares 'exclude' box?

You can control what disks are used by combinations of include and exclude disks.    You should only need to set one of these on any particular share as leaving the fields empty implies include all disks.

No.  Specifiying an Include restricts that particular share to the disks mentioned in the includes. 

 

If you have another share that does not have any explicit excludes then it can use any disk.  Therefore for shares that should not use particular disk(s) then you either need to have a specific list of includes, or leave the includes (which implies all disks) and specify excludes for disks it must not spread to.  In your case you probably do want excludes on such disks to stop the share spreading to disk you do not want to be used.
