January 29, 201412 yr I think it is time to replace my first unraid box….dell Vostro 220. While it works all right for storing movies, music and pictures, I am running plex and can’t have two streams at a time….kids and wife are unhappy…so am I LoL. I need advice on the hardware….I want to spend as less as possible, and be able to stream movies to at least 3 plex clients at the same time. I already bought the case, and have the PSU. I would like a MOBO with as many Sata ports as possible since my case can handle 16 Hard Drives. I already have three wd red 3tb. Will add a wd red 4 tb and a 500 gb as parity. What do you think about the following? Mobo: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8045916&CatId=13 Or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131990 I like the first one better bcs it has more sata ports. CPU: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8037042&CatId=8740 Ram: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7840242&CatId=4534 A quad core might seem killer, but I want to be on the safe side….just in case my server becomes the PLEX-FLIX of the family. Furthermore, all my movies are 1080p and over 10gb each. Advise please. If you know of components that will work, but better prices, please let me know as well. Thank you in advance.
January 29, 201412 yr Those components look fine. I prefer Asus mobos, but that's just personal choice. The CPU will be plenty enough for what you are looking to do. My server (specs in sig) can run 3 concurrent streams without issue and my CPU is less powerful that what you are looking at. Most of my content is 720p though, not 1080p. The i5's you are looking at should easily be able to do 3 concurrent 1080p transcodes.
April 29, 201412 yr Did you ever build this? How is it working? I'm looking at a similar situation. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
