February 2, 201412 yr Post the SMART report. And browser on over to the drive's support page and see what the firmware update is all about. There have been occasions when firmware updates were needed to prevent data loss. But, IMHO, rarely are drive firmware updates needed.

Typically, firmware updates are available as a CD iso which can be booted. A USB CD drive may be required. Alternatively, a DOS boot flash drive can be prepared.
