February 2, 201412 yr Hi All, I'm planning on building my first unRAID NAS in the next few weeks and wanted to check my build with you. My main requirements are low running costs (power consumption) and small size (I don't want it to dominate my lounge!). I plan to use the device to: Store films, music and pictures viewed using Plex. Act as a centralised backup for my other computers. General storage for files. Other than Plex I don't think there are any other specific addons i plan on using at the moment. The plan was to start with a few drives in the device to begin with and just add new ones as I needed more storage. I currently have an awful branded NAS that I have 1 2Tb disk in. So the main reason for upgrading is to get a much larger storage potential, faster R/W speeds, ability to run Plex without my main computer on, and of course the data redundancy provided by unRAID. My current build is the following: CPU: i3 3220T 35W Mobo: MSI B75IA-E33 PCI Sata (when required): Lycom Sata III RAM: Corsair 4GB single 4gb stick so i can easily upgrade to 8 if required. Case: Fractcal Design Node PSU: Silverstone Strider 400W HDD: Planning to use 2x 4tb WD Red's (1x parity, 1x storage), plus a 2tb WD Green that I have from my old NAS once I have migrated the data on it across. Total cost for the build should be about £600. With the potential for 20Tb of storage. I would be grateful for any feedback you can give me. Cheers, Sareon
