Post your known good Xen hardware configs

Featured Replies

Let's get the ball rolling, the idea is state whether the system is Xen capable, and then one step further whether it is capable of PCI passthrough.

Primarily we are looking for configs with unRAID as the host here. But all info is welcome.

Please keep this thread strictly on topic. Off topic posts will be deleted without warning. If you have a question, please create your own thread. All posts should include all info from the blank template below.

System "Name" - ArchX

Xen capable? - Yes.

PCI Passthrough capable? - Yes.

  • Case Antec 902
  • CPU Intel i5 3470 - vt-d capable.
  • Motherboard Asus P8H77-V LE - chose this board due to the high number of expansion slots as there's plenty of room for further SAS cards, TV cards and multiple VGA cards. There seems to be some confusion online as to whether or not this motherboard supports vt-d virtualisation technology, I can confirm 100% that it does.
  • GPU
    • Sapphire HD7970 Ghz Edition - Passed through to Windows for gaming.
    • Radeon HD6450 - Passed through to an XBMCbuntu VM

    [*]RAM 24GB DDR3

[*]PSU Corsair TX750M - partly modular power supply, nice and beefy to power all the gear in this box and thanks to the modular nature it will easily supply power to the 2x video cards and 1x pci-e dvb-s2 card in the box as well as all the hard drives

[*]HBA / SAS Card Supermicro SAS-AOC-SASLP-MV8

    [*]NICs

    • Realtek 8169 based on-board NIC (bridge for Arch and all VMs)

    [*]Hard drives (unRAID array)

    • 6x 3TB Drives
    • 1x 128GB SSD Cache drive (for VM storage)

Brief description of VMs and use cases

Dom0 - unRAID

DomU1 4vcpus / 8gb ram - Windows 8.1 main desktop / gaming VM

DomU2 1 vcpu / 512mb ram - XBMC VM appliance

DomU3 4vcpu / 4gb ram - Arch Linux VM Appliance which does all download / Plex duties

DomU4 8vcpu / 8gb ram - Development VM, used for compiling packages allowing me to keep all other VMs cleaner. Only started on request.

Notes / issues / on-going stuff

  • AMD GPU passed through successfully, some issues installing drivers and stability issues.  Sometimes takes several minutes to boot, other times 30 seconds.  Ironic's scripts seem to work on logon but shutdown is messed up for some reason.
  • USB controller and motherboard audio passed through successfully, haven't tried passing USB devices individually
  • Seeing an unknown xen PCI device, not sure what this is.
  • Unraid doesn't like one of my motherboard's USB controllers.  If the unraid usb stick is on that controller, it won't find it correctly during boot and freak out.  I suspect it has something to do with the fact that this controller has VIA USB hubs for port expansion.
  • Xen can't shutdown windows VM for some reason (GPLPV drivers are installed and fastboot disabled) <I didn't install shutdownmon.exe service!>
  • Legend has it that the two Marvell SATA controllers on my motherboard don't place nicely with unraid or xen.  I'm not using them yet so I haven't started troubleshooting this.
