Newb questions: upgrading from 4.7 to 5.0.5

Featured Replies

Been a while since I've had to come here for support, as my 4.7 Plus box has been running like a champ 24/7 since May of 2012. Now I'm looking on upgrading to version 5 since it's finally in official release (i think). Mainly this is for >2tb support. I've been looking through threads and still have a few questions. Apologies if I've overlooked an obvious answer  due to my impatience..

Questions are:

[*]Does my Plus license cover the upgrade, i.e. do I need to purchase a new license once 5.x is installed?

[*]Will there be significant labor involved in getting the server back to functioning after the upgrade? I'm running a rather vanilla setup and only have a few plugins installed via unMenu if that counts for anything

[*]Are there increased hardware requirements for 5.x? Again: I'm not running anything on the box except for SMB shares

Questions are:

  • Does my Plus license cover the upgrade, i.e. do I need to purchase a new license once 5.x is installed?
  • Will there be significant labor involved in getting the server back to functioning after the upgrade? I'm running a rather vanilla setup and only have a few plugins installed via unMenu if that counts for anything
  • Are there increased hardware requirements for 5.x? Again: I'm not running anything on the box except for SMB shares

yes...your Plus license will work.

no...probably not a lot of labor. Make sure Parity is correct, and run SMART reports. Backup your flash drive to your PC, just in case. Read the release notes for 5.0.x (there are only a couple of 'likely' trip ups...see below)

no...hardware is the same.

*Other Possible Trip-ups:

  • SimpleFeatures is *not* compatible with 5.0.x  If you liked it, consider 'Dynamix' as an alternative. unMENU continues to work.  Most of the other 'popular' plugins made the transition, but check the forums for the latest updates.
  • Additional security was added in 5.0.x  In particular 'root' can no longer access data in shares...you need to define a 'userid' and give him permission to access shares.  'root' continues to be able to do 'sys admin' roles...and can, via console or telnet, access data in shares--just not as a share from your PC.
  • On your flash drive, you should run the Make Bootable script (in the download for 5.0.5). The boot segment for 5.0.5 is a bit larger than for 4.7 and requires more space...save your 4.7 flash to your pc, then run MakeBootable script on the flash drive...and then install unRAID on the flash.
