The last entries for this were back 3 yrs ago.  Is it necessary to scan for viruses and if so, what do I use and how often?

So, sounds like nobody scans their box?

That might be because most run it on internal network if virus get there it passed all other scanners

The core UnRAID doesn't do any notable internet activity, so it's VERY safe from viruses (nothing's totally immune, but I'd consider this pretty close).

 

As for the data you store on it ... if you want to check that, just scan it from your Windows box using the antivirus program you've got installed there.
