Questions about tvheadend as a guest

Featured Replies

Hi,

I tried to fallowed all the discussions about virtualization around the new Unraid 6 and I really like to put my hands on it.

But I have one challenge to solve:

I use tvheadend as source for my XBMC…and over the last year we used it more than the normal satellite receiver.

From my understanding (and I’m a linux noob) I must passthrough the PCI Address of my Satcard to the VM…

and for that I need VT-d support.

Unfortunately I run a Pentium G630T on my Supermicro X9SCM-F and the Intel Website told me that this CPU doesn’t support VT-d.  :'(

So before I’m spending 200€ to buy a Xenon E3-1230v2 I want to know if someone runs tvheadend successfully as a guest with xen?

Is there anything else I must think about?

Found this link http://wiki.xen.org/wiki/Debian_Guest_Installation_Using_Debian_Installer

that explains how to install Debian as a PV guest. So my idea was to fallow this guide with passthrough of sat card

and then install tvheadend on top (they offer a debian package). Make sense?

And input is welcome.

Would also like to know this! Need to buy a new PCI-E satcard also, any suggestions for a UK/Sky user?

I like the TBS cards (UK user)

You won't get sky via a PCI e card unless something has changed.

You'd need a sky+ box for decoding then a HD pvr2 for capture.

Freesat is a different matter though.

Cannot comment on specific compatibility but I have successfully been passing through a TBS 6981 to Windows 7 running Argus for a while under XenServer 6.2.

Can possibly try out tvheadend at the weekend if i have time.

UK also  :D

I don't get why people want to virtualize everything? If it works on bare unraid you don't need an extra layer of software just because it is possible. Tvheadend works very well on unraid, as well do python plugins... I just don't get it.

I think the issue is that moment you add plugins to unRAID you potentially make it less stable.  By constraining every add-on to run in a VM you remove this risk.  You also reduce the risk of plugins interfering with each other as you can run them in their own VM.  Modern machine tend to have plenty of RAM to make this a viable approach.

Having said that there are probably some plugins that NEED to run in unRAID level (Dom_0) to work effectively.  Something like cache_dirs springs to mind.

Enjoy compiling custom kernels do you?  :o

If you use Ubuntu as your VM you can just use your card natively. In minutes.

From what I am seeing in various forums is many people jumping ship from tvheadend to VDR.

I haven't used either in a long time but you might want to checkout VDR and see where it is compared to tvheadend.

As far as tvheadend working well on unRAID without a VM... True.

However...

1. You have to hope other plugins don't crash it or your unRAID WebGUI.

2. You are totally dependent on one person to update tvheadend plugin whereas in a VM you simple run one command to update it.

3. You cannot use all the functions like transcoding because they cause issues with Plex, serviio, etc.

4. Still no 64-Bit version.

5. You would have to compile a custom kernel in the 64-Bit version to add your TV Card possibly.

6. 64-Bit doesn't solve the problem with number 3 above.

Why the hell has Tom released a 64bit version with virtualization....shit...don't get it out of my head.....and my Unraid 5 works very well.  ::)

I've ordered a Xeon E3-1230v2 and a little bit of Ram

Will come back if i run in problems with the VDR/TVheadend in a VM.

With VMWorkstation all this runs much simpler...for a Linux noob  ;)

I thought xen supported software iommu on pv devices, so if you have a pv build of Debian you shouldn't have to buy a new processor.

The option should be iommu=soft

If this doesn't work in 4.3 then please correct me.

TVH has a native newcamd decoder built in so that works great.

Are the TBS cards plug and play in Ubuntu?! I've had a DVBSky S960 USB which is horrible.

TBS drivers need to be compiled in linux.

Schoolbusdriver - you're absolutely right. I've been trying fruitlessly to get a couple of files necessary for me to use TVHeadend with unRAID, and for a few days now no one has responded except to say I should stop asking so much. So no thank you, I'm not going to be dependent on people like this if I have a problem or need to upgrade or something. I'm not a linux guru, which I thought was the point of unRAID, and I have had absolutely no success with unRAID and TVHeadend, so I just started using an older tower I had lying around and installed mythbuntu, and now I have no issues. So to whomever says "the TVHeadend plugin works great for unRAID", I disagree. There is no .plg file like most other plugins (I know there exists a plg file, but out of the 5 different sets of instructions on how to setup TVHeadend, most say not to use the .plg, at least from what I can find)  and it requires some replacement of the kernel, and if you're lucky enough to get someone to post a link to them with your particular drivers, maybe you'll be alright. Otherwise, if you can't compile a kernel, on what to me seems a very different version of linux then you're our of luck. So don't say "it's easy" until you have a plg that installs, and works without all of this other, individual dependent stuff. Sorry if I'm a little mad, but I loved this OS it was a great solution for me. And every other plugin I've installed (APCDaemon, Plex, SABnzbd, Sickbeard, Couchpotato, etc) all work just fine. So until the TVHeadend plugin works like that, it's not "easy" for the "average" unRAID user.
