Disk space usage in UnRAID when viewing from Windows Explorer

Featured Replies

As with most people I primarily use Windows for my desktop machine and use Windows Explorer for most tasks.

When you bring up the properties on a folder in Windows you get 2 indicators of size - Size & Size on disk. Usually with Windows folders these two are fairly close, but I've noticed when doing this on UnRAID there can be huge differences.

For example, I ran this on my Plex library folder and get the following:

Size: 6.87GB

Size on disk: 95.4GB

So, two questions:

1) Why is there such a size difference between the two sizes when in UnRAID (or maybe Linux in general)?

2) Which one should we be relying on?

I am looking at moving Plex to a VM, but want to make sure I have enough storage available. I could just create a 150GB disk to be safe, but want to make sure I understand correctly before doing so.
