New shallower 24x drive 19" by X-Case (similar to Norco 4224)

Featured Replies

There is a new 24 bay case from X-Case that is up to ATX board size and thus 550mm depth instead of 650mm.

The model is 424s ("s" for short), here some more details and reviews:

Notice that quiet PWM 4-wire fans and also a 19" rack rails are included.

This makes it probably a better value than a 4224.

Also the 424 and 424s both fit very well in a standard 19" server rack whereas the Norco have a slight problem while not following EIA width specs.

Is there something like this in the US?

This is pretty much exactly what I would want, but I'm in the US.

I have this case and it works very well. There is however very little room between the back end of the drives (Where you plug in the cables) and the Fans. However once you have seated those cables, all is well. My server runs nearly 24/7. It sucks in barely any dust. The case is sturdy and very easy to set up even for people who don't do this on a daily basis. Definitely recommend it!

I have the standard 424's from X-Case and they are decent for the money.  I expect the short one would be very tight cabling wise,  I moved my 120mm fans to the other side of the fan wall because I wasn't happy with the amount of clearance for the SAS cables.

Also if you are used to enterprise hardware you will think the build quality is junk.... but for the money, they are acceptable.

I have had the RM424 short and found it far to tight a fit for the 8087 cables, in the end I moved to the RM420 Pro model as I didn't need the 24 bays in the RM424 short model and got the 20 bay RM420 pro model which comes with hot swop fans and better hard drive trays. It is far better build quality than the standard non pro models. The internal Hot swop fans run at 900 rpm and are quiet but still keep my drives cool enough but they spin up rapidly if the CPU fan stops working and alarm if any of the Hot swop fans fail, I have 3 spares and have yet to replace any.

Im going to be selling all my server components in the next month as I'm building a newer smaller unit.

There are actually quite a few folks doing that.  With 6TB drives, the need for 20+ drive systems has certainly been significantly reduced.

... but an older system makes a good backup server -- only needs to be fired up once/day/week/month as desired to mirror your main server.

Yes I agree Gary but the money I can get from my components in my Rackmount will mostly cover the costs of the new server and many people still need the storage space of a Rackmount even with the release of the 6TB drives.

Agree ... looking at your components, they're all fairly new technology that should indeed sell for a fairly nice price.    I just never tend to sell my old drives ... they make nice backups (I have 2 servers with over 40TB of data -- all fully backed up).

Because of my server placement, i.e. in a Bedroom I need something that takes up a lot less space and this means less drive bays, hence why all my drives are going to be 6TB and a few 4TB ones as I have a few of them that are nearly new. All my 3TB drives are over a year old and apart from a few that will be replaced by the 6TB ones I will have some 3TB ones to sell as I won't have the drive bays that I did on my rack mount.

Hi megalodon

Which psu have you fitted to the 420 pro and how silent is it? I was almost going to go with a 424 pro just to fit a quiet atx psu but seems crazy given I only need 12 or maybe 16 drives max.

Is there a quiet 2u supply in existence?

I have the Corsair AX760 as its hybrid. Overkill really but the fan never comes on as even with 10 drives on load it only draws 150W. Im going to be putting all my stuff on e-bay next week and I have two RM420 Pro cases for sale, one is new. I think I could have got away with a 500 watt power supply but I wanted a hybrid which only kicks the fan in after 50% load. I don't think I would have noticed it though over the three hot swop drive cooling fans.
