Adding multiple drives to existing array at the same time

Featured Replies

Is this generally not a good idea? I am currently preclearing 2 drives and plan to add them to my array at the same time (so far so good, but might be a day before all 3 cycles are done on both drives). Should I install them one by one with some time inbetween? Or is 3 preclear cycles good enough to show they are good?

Only install as many as you need right now. Save one until the space is needed. This way you have a ready spare in case of drive trouble. You can replace a disabled drive immediately and the pre-clear the old drive at your leisure.

thank you dgaschk. do you see anything wrong with me leaving it hooked up in the server or should remove it completely until a spare is needed? i'm not sure how much stress is put on the drive if it's only powered on but no reading/writing (since it won't be part of the array), but i'm also scared of losing it or dropping it or otherwise redndering it useless somehow.

You can install the drive, but It will need to be spun down manually or with a go file addition.

install it in the case, but don't plug it in.

You'd still have to open your case, of course, to get it operational.
