Smash me in the face with a hammer I'm dumb. Like a true idiot I assumed I was immune from hardware failure, but now the time has come to reap what I have sown.

 

I had a WD10EFRX (Red 1.0TB) fail on me 2 days ago. I don't think there's any way I can get get the data back. The drive won't even spin up, clicks of death with only power plugged in (verified on different machines). Interesting thing is that, when I have the drive installed in the unraid server, the server boots - but something is off. A Teamspeak 3 plugin will start (I'm able to connect to the server and use that application), but the web gui won't boot up. I can telnet in, but that's about it. SYSLOG shows that the drive is there, but encounters a number of errors, and the device won't even execute a SMART test. (Running 5.0rc12a if anyone's curious).

Anyways - I'm RMAing the disk, but I'm trying to figure out how screwed I am in the meantime. My array obviously tells me there's a disk missing, so I can't start it. But what happens when I get a new disk? How can I get that disk running in the array? Will I be able to replace the drive, start the array, and just have a lot of missing files?

 

Needless to say - I have a second drive coming as well that will be my parity, and my lesson has been learned.

I take it by the subject you have no parity disk?  If that is the case then unless you can get that drive spun up (hammer? 3-foot drop?) whatever was on it is lost.  If the failed drive was the parity then you haven't necessarily lost anything, assuming parity has been checked in recent time.  Provide more details and a syslog.

In the old days, putting a hard drive in the freezer for a 30 minutes (inside a plastic bag) was common voodoo for a stuck drive.

But then, drives also used to have their spindles showing through the top...you could grab it with a pair of pliers and give it a jumpstart.

 

We're much more advanced, now, apparently.

But then, drives also used to have their spindles showing through the top...you could grab it with a pair of pliers and give it a jumpstart.

I can remember taking apart a 20MB hard drive and lubing the spindle bearings with a high quality lubricant so that the drive would spin-up properly.  Drives repaired this way would often last for several more months.  (You need to know that the cost of a 20MB hard drive was north of $350 in those days!)

Price was $1500...all drives were extra cost. In today's dollars, this fancy model with the 10 Meg hard drive was $5000.  I had one at work...and was the envy of the people still driving IBM 3278 terminals. :)

Sorry, should have been more detailed in OP.

 

I have never had a parity drive - poor planning and sheer stupidity on my part. The drive that failed was Disk 1 (of a 4 disk + 1 cache) array.

 

I'm OK with the fact that the data on that disk is gone, it sucks but I'll get through it. Assuming the disk is dead / data gone - what I'm wondering is, what is the procedure to get the array back online eventually? I'm RMAing the disk - do I need to wait for the replacement to come before I can do anything? Or can I reconfigure to run with 3 disks and just expand again when the replacement drive comes?

 

Ultimately, I'd like to get the array back online ASAP so I can get the parity drive in place and have that going.

 

Can't get a Syslog rght now, but I will try to get one later tonight if you guys are interested.

You can just set a new config and reassign all the drives.  Assign the 3 data drives to the first 3 data drive slots, assign the cache drive to the cache drive slot and start the array.  It should start fine.  If any of the drives shows as unformatted then one of your drives is not assigned correctly, DO NOT click format.  Stop the array and post back here.

 

Either write down the serial number of the cache drive or take a screen shot of the main page before setting a new config, so you know which drive is the cache.  None of the others matter as you currently have no parity drive.  You can assign any of the data drives to any of the data drive slots, it does not matter which.  The cache drive must be assigned to the cache slot.

 

If you have the parity drive and want to add that at the same time, you can.  Just be sure you are assigning the new drive to the parity slot.
