I have a supermicro X8SIL-F motherboard http://www.supermicro.com/xeon_3400/Motherboard/X8SIL.cfm?IPMI=Y I currently have 2GB of memory which is 2RX8 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-hynix-server-memory-ddr3-pc3-8500-(1066mhz)-240-pin-ecc-unbuffered-cas-7-7-7-pc-apple so I checked the compatibility list http://www.supermicro.com/support/resources/memory/display.cfm?sz=4.0&mspd=1.066&mtyp=32&id=30123074929ABE9168856AF4F4BC904B&prid=81695&type=DDR3&ecc=1®=1&fbd=0 for some 4GB modules and found some of the 2nd one down here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4GB-MICRON-MT36JSZF51272PDZ-1G1F1DD-PC3-8500R-DDR3-1066MHz-ECC-8GB-16GB-MEMORY-/390754968517?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_MemoryRAM_JN&hash=item5afacfa3c5 it has come, but when I swap the memory for that the server just does a long continuous beep, which I think looking at the manual http://www.supermicro.com/manuals/motherboard/3420/MNL-1130.pdf means there is no memory installed, whereas the 2GB stick is 2RX8 these are 2RX4, is that the issue? I don't know whether I have got the wrong memory and it's not actually compatible or whether the RAM itself is knackered, any ideas? :(

At the bottom of the compatability table it says: ** Note: Supports 1-Gb and 2-Gb x8 devices only - Intel 3420 / 3400 Chipset Memory Requirements.

Is that the 2RX8 and why 2RX4 doesn't work?  And if so, wtf is 2RX4 memory doing on the compatability list?  Or is it a case that part can come in either 2RX4 or 2RX8?

I think the answer to this can be found in my own thread from nearly 3.5 years ago, lol http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=7687.0

So the problem is, as I thought, the memory needs to be x8 not x4, in my defence it didn't state anywhere in the listing that the stuff I got was x4, never mind, I've ordered 2 lots of http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4GB-EEC-Memory-Dell-Hynix-4GB-PC3-10600R-1333MHZ-Dimm-/251450619030?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_MemoryRAM_JN&hash=item3a8b9ff496 now (which states in the item details 2Rx8) so hopefully that will work
