what does everyone use as a battery backup these days?

 

I use a 1500-watt APC unit I picked up at GoodWill for $10.00. 

 

The batteries were, of course, spent.  I replaced them, running some heavy cabling outside the UPS to a pair of $25.00 lawn/garden lead-acid batteries.  The combination gives me a lot of backup time, and the batteries (when I finally do have to replace them) are less expensive than the recommended, internal batteries.  The combination has worked well for about 2 years now.
