Say I install a ubuntu VM.  Do I simply just install the apps I need and then it automagically saves to the img file ?

    Your vm is like a real pc. Everything you do there behave like it is on real pc.

    The .IMG file is presented to Ubuntu like a real hard drive. Thus any changes you make inside that IMG are saved just as they would be if it were real.
