How to Update unRaid with VM?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

This is my first post here.

I'm using unRAID for over a year now and always reading the forum, but now is the time for the first post!

I'm looking forward to test the new unRaid with VM support myself.

It is just awesome, i will love it!!

But one question is bothering me, how do I update unRAID if there is a new version?

For me, unRAID v6 is a 26/7 always on machine.

By now, if there is a new release of unRAID, I have to shutdown the Tower, copy some files to the stick, and then start the Tower, and the new version comes up.

But with VMs this will be a pain in the ass. My understanding is, that if there will be a new version of unRAID, first I have to shutdown all VMs, then shutdown unRAID, copy the new files to the stick, start unRAID, start all VMs, check all!

Is there a easier way to handle future unRAID releases?

Regards

Owel

You cab copy the files ti the USB stick (to the 'flash' share' with the system running.  This avoids the need to take the USB stick out of the unRAUD server to update its content.

However you will need to do a shutdpwn/restart to pick up changes.  I cannot think of a way to avoid that.

In fact I usually copy upgrades to the flash with the system running and then reboot. If you export the flash share there is no need to remove the flash to copy files to it from Windows or whatever. I have been doing it this way since I first started using the 5 betas.

Since unRAID6 is the host for the VMs I think it will always be necessary to shutdown the VMs to update unRAID.

Copy to flash share and restart only the unraid VM.

Unless you use unraid as an nfs share in esx.

Edit. This is for v5
