February 19, 201412 yr Hello I am planning on building a NAS for home media sharing use. It just needs to be reliable. I am thinking: Fractal Design Node 304 Case http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352027 Asus H87I-Plus Motherboard http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132032 Intel Core i5-4430 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116895 Crucial 16GB (2x8) Ram http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148466 Anteq Basiq BP350 PSU http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=36517&promoid=1360 6 x 4TB WD HDDS, either Red or Green http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236599 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236604 I would appreciate if anyone could comment (or even just confirm that it would work) on this potential build. Especially, if this power supply is sufficient and whether I should go with WD Red or Green drives. Thanks a lot!
February 19, 201412 yr Author Also, what about buying these external drives and taking the drives out of them? I suspect they are just green drives inside and I can get these at a discount. http://www.futureshop.ca/en-ca/product/wd-wd-my-book-4tb-3-5-external-hard-drive-wdbfjk0040hbk-nesn-black-wdbfjk0040hbk-nesn/10266433.aspx?path=0667b0ab2c9055f1334041e630981701en02
February 19, 201412 yr What do you plan to do with the server? Just streaming, virtualization, plugins?
February 19, 201412 yr Nice build. Just two comments ... (1) Use WD Reds, not the greens (2) Notwithstanding the claim that ATX power supplies work in this case, you'll have a much nicer build if you use an SFX unit. 300w is plenty -- this would be a good choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256097
February 19, 201412 yr Author I am using it to stream media (1080p 5.1) to a couple pcs and tvs (likely not more than 2 at a time). Down the line it may need to transcode video or act as a dnla server. I also plan on running a BitTorrent client plug in. I know that I can probably get by with a less powerful CPU but I figure that I may as well make it future proof in case I want to do more with it later (more plug ins or virtualization). Thanks for the replies!
February 19, 201412 yr I know that I can probably get by with a less powerful CPU ... Definitely true. ... but I figure that I may as well make it future proof in case I want to do more with it later (more plug ins or virtualization). ... and definitely a good idea [The last one I built we used a Core i7-4771
February 19, 201412 yr Author Do you think this build could handle a VM running xbmcbuntu so that it could double up as an htpc? I have never used VMs before but from what I have been reading, this seems like one of the potential uses for them.
February 19, 201412 yr Should easily handle virtualization. The only issue might be whether or not the HTPC VM can use the on-chip graphics to drive your HDTV. Shouldn't be a problem, but it depends on the specific hypervisor you're using. Personally, I prefer to keep my UnRAID servers "clean" and have dedicated HTPCs for each of my TVs.
February 20, 201412 yr In terms of sizing your PSU, I would use the following online tool: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp You just have to input your components, and the tool will output the recommended PSU wattage for your setup.
