DVBSKY S952 & Tvheadend in DomU does not work.

Featured Replies

Hi,

my goal is to run a VM with tvheadend to stream live TV to my XBMC clients. Easy task i thought...

Now, 5 days later i give up. I tried Debian Squeeze and Wheezy (also with kernel backports), Ubuntu Saucy and Arch. Everything as PV and HVM

More or less in every combination with tvheadend stabil, beta & unstabil.

But i only get two results:

1) tvheadend see the card but was unable to scan for muxes

2) tvheadend see the card, was able to scan for muxes but can't tune to a channel.

Also i got signal level ~50% or 4230% ........

BUT in a Windows 7 64bit HVM with dvbviewer everything worked like i expected.

Also in Unraid 5 it worked perfect.

I think that shows that the Card is ok and that passthrough is working.

Any advice what i made wrong, or what i can try?

Has someone a working linux vm with DVBSKY driver or tvheadend?

Maybe with both  ;)

Thanks

seems that i'm the only one who plays with a tvserver  :-\

Ok, other question:

Can someone point me to a thread or explain how i can start my Unraid 5.0 as DomU HVM in a

Unraid 6????

Dont need Harddrives, just want to see if the mediatree works inside a VM.

I've read a lot of treads, but dont see the wood for the trees.

Cheers

That would be the dumbest thing I've ever heard!!! (Running an unraid 5 VM in v6 I mean). No offense!

Its like carrying a motorcycle on your back whilst riding a penny farthing.

Anyway, just install a normal Linux OS and follow your manufactures guides. This isn't really an unraid issue though, so I'd post in the device manufacturers forums or contact their support.

If your VM runs, then its beyond what I consider the general scope of this forum. Not to say we won't help you with your TV card but more that you'd be better served asking these questions where people with the relevant knowledge live.

Running Unraid 5.0 inside of 6.0 is a great idea.  This would make it much easier to move all of your plugins to there own vm's without losing functionality while you work on it.

I've virtualized unraid inside of virtualbox a bunch of times but I'm not sure how to do it in Xen.

I still think you should try using your tv tuner inside of a pv domu with iommu=soft.

Maybe my English is to bad....but I DON'T want to use the Nas function of unraid 5 in the Vm!

Only the working DVB Driver & Tvheadend! This will show me if it is possible or not.

For that I only need to boot it and have a small drive with a copy of my config.

Like I said: It works in a native unraid 5 and in a windows vm, but not in a Linux vm.

Need to know if the problem is in the computer or in front of the keyboard. ????

Exactly why I said it was a daft idea. Running unRaid v5 without storage just for a TV card (the most awkward OS to get a TV card working on) over ubuntu or some other widespread distro seems like madness. Running v5 and v6 side by side to upgrade and ease teething pains, sure. But surely not in this scenario.

Just my 2 cents... I can't actually stop you doing it!

If Unraid 5 works perfectly as you say, why don't you give Slackware a try inside a VM?

Maybe a old(er) kernel could do the trick. I have no clue, just trowing out ideas.

I managed to run my unraid 5 as DomU in Unraid 6, was match easier than i expected and now tvheadend works.  ;D

Now i can play around and just boot the unraid 5  VM in the evening, so my wife is happy that xbmc works.

My way (as a windows guy):

Create a new 2 GB img file, add this as hdb to an exisiting windows VM. Boot Windows, create a partition, make them active, format the new drive with fat32, name it UNRAID

copy the whole Unraid 5 Stick to the new Drive, run make_bootable as admin with parameter -f.

Now you can use this image file for a hvm machine, i only must add the parameter model=e1000 to the vid config. Without that unraid did not found a nic.

(unraid runs in free/demo mode, because you don't have the stickid, but for me this is not relevant)

Thanks

i will be today try prepare Unraid 6.0 (custom build) with drivers for DVB ;)

about

Signal mater on Linux is broken ;) i have very good quality signal - everything works OK, but also tuner show me 50% of signal ;)

any other shome me arround 90%

About system for VM, you can try Openelec (virtual version) - which have DVBSky driver and Tvheadend or VDR installed like addons ;)

I found a working solution!  :)

I installed Arch as a HVM and then i used my new best friend "yaourt" to install the rest.

yaourt dvbsky

select 1 install the firmware

yaourt dvbsky

select 2 install the mediatree (you need 2GB Ram or must expand the /tmp. Otherwise you run out of disk space)

yaourt tvheadend

select 5 to install tvheadend from git.

and if you like

yaourt oscam

select 2.

The same steps on a Arch PV result in lots of interference. Like it was on a heavy snow or rainy day. I also tried it with iommu=soft, but does not change anything.

Maybe that saves someones time.
