February 20, 201412 yr http://www.photographybay.com/2014/02/20/lacie-ships-now-offers-a-5tb-external-hard-drive/ Not sure who makes the actual HDD yet, but I'm sure we will hear more about this over the next few days.
February 20, 201412 yr According to engadget they are Seagate drives. Nowt on Seagates website at first glance. M0zz
February 20, 201412 yr The link says these are 7200rpm drives, which is very interesting, as neither WD nor Seagate are even shipping 4TB drives with 1TB platters at 7200rpm (they do have 3TB versions at that speed). I very seriously doubt the WD Red 5TB units will run at 7200rpm; but these could be an evolution of Seagates SV35 series to 5 platters -- although if that's the case it's interesting that they don't have a 4TB version. In any event, it's a good sign that the 5TB units are CLOSE !!
February 20, 201412 yr Author Might be a Toshiba drive: http://www.zdnet.com/toshiba-launches-5tb-enterprise-hard-drives-7000026294/
February 21, 201412 yr Might be a Toshiba drive: ... Looks fairly likely that's the case, since these are 7200rpm drives.
February 27, 201412 yr I know HGST has 6TB and may have a 8TB by the end of the year. They aren't affordable per GB yet though.
