Anybody with similar build? Server = unRAID + tvheadend + PlexServer.

Featured Replies

Have many of you had success in building a unRAID server with PlexServer and tvheadend plugins? This is what I am trying to do but if it's not being implemented SUCCESSFULLY, by others I will move on to testing other software since I'm really still at step two and experiencing difficulties.

I don't want to feel like I'm forcing software to do what it is not entirely intended to do. I am trying to build a media network. Server storing media (downloading metadata) and recording live TV (removing commercials). I plan on having multiple front ends running XBMC. If it ends up that I just made poor hardware decisions, I will switch it out and get the right hardware.

Little background:

I built a HTPC running Windows Media Center on W7 but wasn't completely satisfied with stability and responsiveness.

I built a server running Ubuntu and Plex Server and got it successfully up and running and could access movies, home movies and music via iPhone. I wanted to figure out how to get live tv though.

I wiped the Plex Server and installed Mythbuntu and got MythTV working successfully. But I was not really happy with the MythTV front end and that's when I came across this article http://mymediaexperience.com/unraid-nas-with-plex-media-server-and-tvheadend/ and thought I'd give unRAID a shot.

What kind of tuners are you running?  I played around with tvheadend + unRAID but I have two HDHomerun Prime Cable card tuners. At the time all I could use them for in tvheadend was clear Qam.  I agree the Mythtv frontend is lacking.  What I have running now is a Mythbuntu backend/XBMC frontend in the living room and 3 Raspberry Pi's in the bedrooms with Openelec + my unRAID server but no plex.  With the  two HDHR Prime tuners  I can tune in every channel but premium like HBO, Showtime, etc.  What I am in the process of doing is I upgraded my unRAID server motherboard/CPU and am running unRAID 6 with Xen and a VM of Unbuntu 13.10 Xfce with Myth Backend Master installed plus Mythbuntu Control Centre. I have yet move the backend to the unRAID VM.  I will use my old unRAID motherboard for a low power Openelec frontend in the living room.  With the new motherboard I expect I could run Plex also.
