Anyone with LSI MegaRaid 9240-8i in unraid, stable and on latest bios /firmware?

Featured Replies

Hello;

I have problems setting up this controller (cross-flashing, dumbing it down/make it behave as a HBA controller - LSI SAS 9210-8i, or SAS9211-8i). The motherboards I have give errors/warnings when following the process outlined by many, and my own result is far from stable. disks not showing up at all, or only partially, errors in syslog, etc.

In order for me to adjust expectations, I tried to read everything in these forums, but I'm not sure I understand what others, who have this card, settled on, from a firmware and bios versions perspective.

Are you using the IR or the IT versions, of the firmware, 2108, or 2118? Bios (mpt.rom) version - the latest for these HBA cards is 7.35 - is anyone using it, or not?

Thank you for your input!

bumping up this question...

Hopefully someone will comment/offer personal experiences.

Due to motherboard limitations I have not been able to load the latest firmware (and downgrade the card as others seem to have done it. However since no one is posting any evidence that they used the latest firmware and BIOS, it may be that those who have crossflashed the 9240-8i with different bios/fw, have done so using older versions.

Is that right?

As I stand now, after messing the controller up completely, I managed to flush it back with the original MegaRAID firmware - the latest version from LSI web site. Aside from disabling the BIOS, I have not done anything else, and all my (unraid) hard drives connected to the controller show up at boot time, but are not seen  inside/ and by unraid - neither harddrives, nor controller.

On the other hand, since I have a spare drive loaded with Linux Mint v16 x64, I just plugged it into the same system, and booted that image, instead of that of unraid.

Imagine my surprise to see that Mint has absolutely no problem recognizing the controller (loading mptsas driver) and reporting all the harddrives. I see all of them in Dolphin file manager, and if I click on each the browser opens them one by one and I'm able to explore all directories and all files w/o any issue.

Taking this further, I can also run a reiserfsck, w/o any problem.

The conclusion I guess is that mptsas driver is not available in unraid? And because of that all these endless crossflashing torments?

Looking for some enlightenment and  solution ...

Thank you
