Thinking of converting my rig to this xen setup with a minimalist windows (overclocking ultilities are more abundant than linux!) install for mining.

 

Is there any performance hit using VT-D?

Barely. Less than 5%.

I passed a 7870 through to a Win8 VM on ESXi 5.5

 

I lost maybe ~5-10khash in the process. It was pretty negligible.

 

I can OC in afterburner and/or CGminer with no issues. I can't imagine it would be much difference in Xen either.
