March 5, 201412 yr Has anybody done this recently? The wiki led me to this post from 2009: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=4225.msg38318#msg38318 It's 5 years old and I was wondering if anybody has done this recently and if it still applied to unRAID 5. The reason I ask is because I plan on hardwiring a ubuntu machine to the unRAID box to act as a separate server running plex media server and deluge (torrent client). I'm trying to keep the unRAID box isolated for both security and hardware longevity purposes. I'm also open to suggestions if anybody has input.
March 5, 201412 yr Why not just connect them through your router. A lot simpler, more flexible, and still isolated from the rest of the world. Or are you trying to isolate it from your local network for some reason? There are some security features with unRAID users and shares that might take care of most of your concerns about your local network.
March 5, 201412 yr You can always make use of VLANs to separate out those boxes, if you have a router that supports it. I don't really understand why you'd want them completely isolated and off your network, especially since you've mentioning Plex, which would need internet access to get all of its metadata and remote access goodness. Edit: Just realized the topic says newbie. I'd avoid VLANs. Maybe give us a better idea of what you're trying to do. A simple switch may be a better option as well.

I ended up going with everything connected via router. The main thing I'm trying to accomplish is keeping the unRAID box to a bare bones NAS, which is why I have an old laptop doing the Plex Media Center work. In the future, I plan on replacing that with another machine powerful enough to send transcoded streams outside of my network, but that's a battle for another day (and paycheck). I'm currently in the process of pre-clearing and setting everything up so I'm not quite sure if everything will work like I planned. Do you think there would be issues with the set up? I'm not really sure how it would work with the streaming machine being separated from the actual hard drives. I'd imagine that there could be issues as any data would have to go from unRAID >> Plex machine >> TV. I might just be over thinking everything... also, another random question: If I have a SSD cache set up, will files on there be available in my plex library before they are moved my data disks? Thanks for reading
March 10, 201412 yr Via the router is the best choice. There's no problems with having PMS on another machine. If you run into problems, it may be related to your network. Just make sure it's hardwired for best performance (I've only ever used it either with gigabit or within a virtualized server). Yes, as long as you have your shares set up to use the cache disk, as far as Plex is concerned, it will appear within the share.
