Running apps from flash drive

Featured Replies

Anyone see an issue with running apps directly from the flash drive?

It only has a finite number of writes before it will die.

Depends on the app. In addition to the space requirements of the app you would have to consider if the app does a lot of writing to the flash drive, which may shorten its life.

What exactly do you mean by running directly from the flash drive anyway? Applications load into memory and run. Even when they have working storage, that is probably in RAMfs.

If they have a database like plex for example then that database could be on a drive. That is typically the reason for a plugin having an application directory in its settings. It could be the flash drive but it is recommended to put it on a cache drive, one of the array drives, or a drive mounted outside the array.

Do you have any specific use case you need advice on?
