March 22, 201412 yr Hi, everyone. My tower has been running fantastically well over the past couple of years. I've got a single SUPERMICRO CSE-M35T-1B hot-swap bay and have finally reached capacity on the drives. I now need to add a second one. I believe that I need a SATA extender now, but I'm not sure. Would someone be able to advise if I do? My build is very similar to the Blackhole build here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=19773.0 Specs are as follows: Case: Lian-Li PC-A77F http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=478&cl_index=1&sc_index=25&ss_index=61&g=spec Motherboard: SuperMicro X9SCM-F http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182253&Tpk=SuperMicro%20X9SCM-F HD Bay: SuperMicro CSE-M35T-1B http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121405 Power Supply: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX750M http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139030&Tpk=corsair%20tx750m So my question is, do I need to buy just this, http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121405 or that AND this http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101358 ? Thanks!
March 22, 201412 yr That's not a "SATA extender" => it's simply a SATA RAID card that will provide 8 more SATA ports. ... and Yes, you most likely need it. Your motherboard has a total of 6 SATA ports. If you're using 5 of them, then you only have one left, so to grow beyond a total of 6 drives you will need to add additional ports. The card you listed will add 8 more ports -- giving you a total of 14 ports, which should be enough for a while
March 22, 201412 yr ... by the way, if you buy that card, be sure to get the cables for it - it does not come with the breakout cables to connect to your drives.
March 22, 201412 yr If you are not shy about ebay, you might want to do a search for "AOC-SASLP-MV8." Auction for same HBA + breakout cables. FH bracket can be had for $9 - I have bought brackets from same vendor for LSI HBAs and they work fine. fyi
March 22, 201412 yr Author Thanks, guys. That clears it up (and my bank account). What is the acronym "HBA"? I didn't realize I'd need the bracket and cables as well. I managed to grab one on ebay on your suggestion for $111 cdn with breakout cables. Now I need to find the bracket.
March 22, 201412 yr What is the acronym "HBA"? Host Bus Adapter Simple means the SATA card (i.e. host-bus SATA adapter)
