New router can't see server

Featured Replies

I just recently upgraded to cable internet from ADSL2+. Hooked up my new cable modem/router and am connected to the net at speeds i dreamed of as a little boy. However I cannot see my unraid server.

I checked the unraid server ip addres by typing ifconfig eth0 at the server ( 192.168.1.8 ) but when i type the ip into a search bar it doesn't find anything.

I'm not too sure what to do from here.

... Hooked up my new cable modem/router ...

Is this a new modem AND router (or combo box) ??

If so, how is the UnRAID server connected?  If its still on the old router, then it's likely on a different subnet than your other system(s) -- so you won't see it.

Describe EXACTLY how you have things connected right now ...

[exactly what you have connected to each box, and to which ports (LAN, WAN, etc.)]

OK no problems.

Well I rewired my house with cat6 the other day in prep for new cable internet.

So it goes: All the ethernet points around the house --> a patch panel --> patch panel points patched to the switch ---> switch fed from the cable modem/router ( combo ) and the modem router is plugged into the cable point on the wall on the cabinet.

So the modem router has an ethernet cable coming out of one of the ethernet ports to feed the switch.

The modem router is a combo unit supplied by my ISP ( Telstra, in Australia ). Brand new as of about 2 hours ago when the guy literally connected it up and tested it. The internet works fine to all points in the house. The old adsl 2+ modem/router is completely disconnected and not being used anymore.

I don't think it is a physical network issue as I could connected to the unraid server before on the old router. I think I have to change a setting or something to "refind" the server. I'm positive the unraid server ip address is 192.168.1.8 because thats what it comes up as when I type in " ifconfig eth0 ". ( I have a monitor hooked up to the server so I can check details or change things if I need to )

Is the UnRAID server set to use DHCP ... or is it a static IP?

If it's a static IP, your new router likely uses a different subnet than what you were on before ... so your PC doesn't "see" it.

If you open a command window on a PC, and type "ipconfig /all", what does it show for your default gateway IP address?  ... and what is the IPv4 address for the PC?

default gateway is 192.168.0.1

ipv4 is 192.168.0.2

edit* sorry i forgot to add, Im pretty sure I set the unraid server to static ip. It has the same address as before when it was using the old router. I think that might be the problem?

Do I have to set my unraid server up with a new ip address in accordance with the new router?

The problem is exactly as I thought -- different subnets.

You can either set the server to use DHCP, or you can change its static IP to an IP on the same subnet as your new router -- i.e. it needs to be 192.168.0.xx  (xx can be whatever you want, but be sure it's "out of the way" of what the DHCP server might set -- if you only have a couple PCs on the network, you could make it 192.168.0.22 and it should be plenty safe.    But unless you have a specific need to use a static IP, just set it to use DHCP and you'll never have to worry about it if you should ever change routers again.

That will resolve your access problem  :)

all done, the server's ip is assigned by the router dhcp now and i can accessit. Thanks for your help

Glad to help.  ... and with the server set to use DHCP you'll never have this issue again, since if you change routers it will be assigned a new IP from the new router  :)
