High Point RocketRAID 2320 question

Featured Replies

I have read a number of posts on this site about the RocketRAID 2320, and understand that the card will not work with a default unRAID system, but none of the posts specify if the card can work with a modified unRAID system.  I recently picked up the card on EBay and would like to use it in an unRAID system if possible.  I see that High Point has Linux drivers for Fedora, Red Hat, and Suse.  Do I need to compile a custom kernel with one of these drivers?  Any help,  pointers, or suggestions  are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ok

This card looks similar to the 2300 http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2933.0 and it works in unraid.  Your best bet will be to install the card, add just one drive to it and test it.  You'll want to check the bios to make sure your in JBOD mode.  I took a look at the high point sight and it looks like there is only one version of the bios.  Best case senario is that unraid sees the drive.  If not you could add unmenu http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2595.0 and see if Linux itself can see the drive.  If it can and you can mount it using unmenu then there is a great chance to make it work with unraid.

I recently bought an LSI card and unmenu can see my test drive but unraid can't.  I talked with Tom and its due to how the Linux sees the drives.

Once you try the card and if it doesn't work post a syslog so it can be troubleshooted.

Eric,

Thank you for responding.  I installed the card, added one drive to it, and configured it as JBOD in the RocketRAID BIOS config.  Unfortunately, unRAID is not seeing the drive attached to the RocketRAID 2320.  I already have unMenu installed and checked the Main tab but do not see any other drives listed there either.  I am attaching a syslog and a PDF from the unMenu screen.  If you need any other info just let me know.

Thanks for the help,

Ed

From the syslog, the kernel is only seeing 2 drive controllers, a dual channel IDE controller (using piix driver) and a dual channel IDE-emulating SATA controller (using ata_piix).  Support for that card is apparently not included yet.  Somewhere I have posted about the drivers needed for the different HighPoint / RocketRAID cards.  Either Tom will need to add the support, just request it from him, or you can build a custom kernel (check the links at the bottom), and include the correct driver.

How do I contact Tom to request support for this card.  I’m also interested in learning more about how to build a custom kernel and will look into that as well.

Shouldn't this thread be moved to the Hardware section?

Jim, I am noticing a common theme with you! grin...

I've successfully added a HPT 2310 card to my system (Asus P5B-E Plus), which already has 2 Sil-3132 (? The two ports pci-e card, whcihever model those were) external cards on board. Initially I had issue during boot up sequence, that sometimes the HPT's BIOS get initialized properly but oft times I only get blank screen where HPT's init screen should be.

A quick BIOS upgrade to the latest non-beta version fixed this. I noticed that before the BIOS upgrade, my pci-e init sequence was SIL, SIL, HPT.. now it's HPT, SIL, SIL. I've also experimented by connecting 2 drives to the HPT, one initialized by the controller (as JBOD) the other uninitialized. Both showed up within unraid with no problem so far.

This is good news.

I would be interested to see if they are recognized as a raid array (perhaps a raid 0 array)

At the very least I would be interested to see how the raid volumes show up in /dev/disk/by-id and /dev/disk/by-path

Might be a way to string together multiple drives for parity.

@WeeboTech: Yes, I've planned to do that too in the future. But for the time being, my write requirement isn't that high yet, and my parity is at 1.5TB. If I can free up 3x 750gb drive I'll do that.

ysss,

I have checked on HighPoint’s WEB site and the 2320 and 2310 appear to be similar but not exact.  I’m still struggling to get my 2320 to work in unRAID.  Were there any 2310 BIOS/firmware config items that you had to change from their defaults?
