[EXPIRED] Seagate 4TB External HDD USB 3.0 (STBV4000100) $130 at Amazon

Featured Replies

The 2TB and 3TB are also on sale for $70 and $107.  That is a record low for the 2TB.

WHY are the externals cheaper than the internals?!  This makes no sense!!

What does everyone do, buy the external, and pop the drive out to install into UnRaid, or are you actually using it via USB3?

I have popped the drives out of these cases in the past, but I'm curious what the implications are on the warranty once I do this.  I suppose I'm on my own, and that's OK too I guess..  I don't have too many failures of drives before they are out of date anyway...

Comments?  Thoughts??

People have said they were able to preclear in the enclosure and check the smart reports prior to cracking open the USB. Seems reasonable. But I hate breaking into those things. I'd pay a little extra for the internal with full warranty. But saving $20 would be tempting.

I believe it's mostly the warranty. The externals usually only have a one year warranty and internals have two or three (used to be 5). You used to be able to pop them out of the enclosure and the drives inside had a longer warranty but I think manufacturers have caught on the this. This is what I've heard though as I have never harvested a drive.

... What's the record for any 4tb?

$125 Seagate external, AFAIR.

Yep, that's what I do. I don't care about warranty. Or at least I'm trying to convince myself that I don't care  ;D
