[EXPIRED] Hitachi (HGST) Deskstar 4TB 5400 rpm $139 at B&H

Featured Replies

How do these compare to the Reds and NAS drives?  I currently have all Hitachi 2TB drives and am very happy with them, however I am running out of space and been wanting to upgrade to 4TB drives.  Everyone seems to like the Red and NAS drives and I don't hear much about the Hitachi's.

I've  had several 2 and 3 tb hitachi's first running in individual systems then migrated into my unraid build for (total 5 or 6 years now) running nearly continuously then entire time and have yet to have to replace one. I have replaced a 3TB seagate. All drives running in mid 20's ©.

From all of my research, hitachi comes out way ahead of seagate and seagate (I have a few) comes way ahead of western digital (I will NEVER buy).

thanks for the catch on the Hitachi, ordered a few!

Thanks for the response.  Did you place separate orders?  It only discounted 1 when I placed multiple in my cart.

Just chatted with their customer support

"Moshe S:  At this time the special price is set at a limit 1 per customer."

You might want to look at those charts on your link again as it conflicts with what you are saying. Out of the 3 brands, Seagate has a much higher failure rate than the other two.

I mostly have WD, a few Seagate drives and one or two from other brands. I've had about the same number of issues with WD drives as I have Seagate but have about 3 or 4 times as many WD drives. I swore off Seagate a while ago but recently, against my better judgement, got a 3TB Seagate drive because they are so cheap. I'm worried I will regret it.

Any idea what the warranty is on this?

Edit: 3 years

do you guys have any issues using a 5400RPM drive as a parity drive?

Discounts are usually one drive per house per person. Be creative.

It's always best to use a faster parity drive, but without the overhead of the raid, you probably won't notice much of a difference until you get to SSD.

In general, Hitachi has always been a more dependable drive (as both the Google study and the blazer study). But since I thought I heard that they were bought out by Seagate, perhaps they will all just become the same bland brand. One big reason for having a raid array! Would love for unraid to pick up P+Q redundancy.

The performance of the parity drive is slightly important for non-cached writes if you are going to be doing multiple simultaneous writes to the array.  It is easy to change out the parity for a faster drive later, but I expect you will be satisfied. This is very reliable drive at a very good price. I'd go for it if you need drives.

BTW - the deal is over but I called them and they honored to price, and I bought 2.

YMMV

By WD.

IIRC their desktop drives division went to one company and laptop drives to another. I may be wrong though. Too busy to Google.

Dammit! Saw this at work and by the time I got home and decided to get it, it expired.

Toshiba supposedly got their 3.5 inch factories and some related technologies, but if you buy a HGST branded 3.5 inch disk that money is going to WD. For example I got a WD 4TB external. Cracked it open and the disk was the same HGST this thread was about.

It is a weird mix.  When I ordered my first 2 Toshiba 3TB drive it was a Hitachi drive with Toshiba stamped on it.  Those drives even had a Hitachi firmware.  The next 6 that I purchased with the same OEM model number I purchased from Newegg had Toshiba firmware and Hitachi was no where to be found on the label but the drive looks the same except for the label.  I've since ordered Hitachi drives of 3 an 4TB sizes and they are all HGST labeled which I realize is a WD company now the 3TB were Hitachi model numbers on the Toshiba drives.  It appears that Toshiba and WD have cannibalized Hitachi and are essentially using the same 3.5 hardware now but different firmware's.

I wouldn't worry too much. Now that Toshiba has their 5TB drive fully on the market, the 4TB deals will be seen more often - the top segment is taken by a new king.

Drives came today. Pack job ok only because drives are in retail packaging. I think Neweggs new hard bubblewrap "boxes" are better though.

Disappointed to see that these retail drives no longer come with SATA cables or power adapters / splitters. The only thing it came with was 4 screws in a little baggie! Maybe this just dates my last retail packaged drive purchase.

Serial numbers seriously close together. Last three digits only differ by one letter E vs X in second to the last digit.
