Slow parity check on Tam's server (Supermicro H8DME-2)

Try it this way and see what your times are:

Onboard: 6 HDD

SLOT1 (100mhz): -

SLOT2 (100mhz): SAT2-MV8: 7 HDD

SLOT3 (133mhz): -

SLOT4 (133mhz): SAT2-MV8: 6 HDD

Noted.

I've also updated the above with channel speed tallies. It seems that I max out around 300MB/s per channel in any configurations. I have two of Tam's server and I can try to scrouge about a dozen 1.5-2TB drives to test on the second server.

First thing I plan to test will be to put all 12 drives on 2x SAT2-MV8 and overload them all on the 133mhz channel.

I have a tams server, 3 pci x cards, although a different motherboard, X7dbe i believe.....I typically get 70-90 for parity check average....I do see over 100 on occasion

How many drives?

I have 9 installed inc. cache & Parity

You said you get 70-90MB/s on parity check with that setup?

That means you get 630MB/s - 810MB/s total throughput (*9); your bottom speed is still similar to the total throughput that I'm getting with mine (perhaps that accounts the latency\overhead due to more drives).

Any plans to add more drives? It'd be interesting if you can maintain the speed past 10 drives.

I still have about 1.5t free, so will likely have to add another drive or 2 over the next couple weeks, I'll let you know if the speeds are the same after.

I had also upgraded the Proc's to 2.83 Xeon quad core's as well as 16gb ram. Tried to go to 32gb as the board supports it, but for some reason it won't post with 8-4gb chips (no issues with 8-2gb chips so slots are ok)

Got some time to play with the second server (also from Tam, same SC846 chasis and H8DME-2 mobo)...

Loaded 8 drives (mix of 2TB and 1.5TB) on a single SAT2-MV8 adapter, installed it in the slowest PCI-X slot (slot 4, 100mhz). Created a new unraid array, right off the bat the parity rebuild speed was 47.x MB/sec.

So.. 47.5 MB/s * 8 = 380MB/s

Edit: above 1.5tb, the speed went up to 64MB/s

Edit2: Moved the SAT2-MV8 to the 133mhz slot, parity check speed went down a little to 45MB/sec.

Tested with an array of just 6 drives: 58MB/s

Tested with an array of just 4 drives: 90MB/s

Edit 3: tested an array of 6 drives on the onboard sata and parity check was 100MB/s

@clowrym: oh, I thought you have the same motherboard as mine. Sounds like yours has better total throughput...
