Ubuntu 12 vs 14 VNC vs RDP Viewer

Featured Replies

RDP: windows Remote Desktop Protocol:

Enter IP

- This can be obtained after the XEN ubuntu is started via unraid

- using Putty (or the physical terminal)

- type xl console ubuntuVmName

- type ifconfig

More Options - Ubuntu username

Ubuntu LTS 12.04 has the ability to display RDP so long as

1- basic ubuntu server is installed

2 - ubuntu desktop is installed

3 - sudo apt-get update

4 - sudo apt-get install xrdp

Ubuntu LTS 14.04 hs these REMOVED, but they may be added back.  I was unable to get VNC working on 14.04

1- basic ubuntu server is installed

2 - ubuntu desktop is installed

3 - sudo apt-get install  xrdp

4 - sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

5 - echo "xfce4-session" > ~/.xsession

6 - sudo /etc/init.d/xrdp restart

This take a little longer for the screen to come up - and it is not as pretty as the Ubuntu desktop, but it WORKS.

Installed LTS 14 via iconic badgers guide (included basic & desktop options)

In putty:

xl console ubuntu

entered username & password

sudo apt-get install xrdp

sudo apt-get install tightvncserver

enter username & password

says: xauth: file /home/chris/.Xauthority does not exist

says: new 'X' desktop is ubuntu:1

ifconig

use tightvnc viewer in windows & port 5901 with Raw encoding

Login - takes me to ubuntu:1 which is a blank grey screen.

...

If I try to use windows remote viewer I am taken to Login to xrdp screen.

I have multiple drop down modules.

Selecting sesman-xvnc allows me to enter my username  & password, but connects me to a grey & white checkmarked screen

...

any other option used shows an Error in connection

all I am trying to do is RDP into the desktop of the server.  thanks for ANY help!

Try restarting the VM and try again. Also for the first try uncheck ssh.

I think they removed some packages from 14.04 ubuntu that allowed xrdp and vnc. Someone more knowledgeable can give more details.

I had the same issue. I think the problem is that ubuntu no longer includes the 2d desktop version of unity. And without passing through a gpu, in other words, without hardware acceleration, unity 3d doesn't work.

Some guides I found online suggested the use of other desktop solutions like xfce. I just ended up reverting to my 12.04 backup since it works really well with unity 2d through xrdp

12 LTS appears to work fine

14 LTS appears to be lacking some component(s) allowing RDP/VNC desktop rendering.

Kryspy - the link you provided looks to be EXACTLY what is needed.  Sadly I deleted the /mnt/cahce/VM/ubuntu14 prior to seeing your post.  When I get some more time I will try this as I would rather settle into 14 than 12.

Many Cheers!

Is there a reason you're trying to install a separate VNC server and not using the one built in? The included Vino server works perfectly fine.

I did not realize that a VNC server was already included
