How to modify unMENU and BubbaRAID? Help requested.

Featured Replies

Well, hardware for the file servers is on its way.  In the meantime, I wanted to get a build of unRAID up and running on the flash drives so all I have to do when I get the server hardware set up is plug the flash drives in (hopefully).  So far, unRAID works great, and the pro keys seem to have been properly detected.  It's currently just running on my Windows desktop, so it doesn't have any hard drives associated with it, but that's okay, since I'm just working out the scripts, addons, interface, and occasional bug right now.

However, as I have been installing a few addons, I've run into a few problems...

1.  Can I install both BubbaRAID and unMENU (I thought BubbaRAID had unMENU built in, but when I tried to access port 8080 for unMENU in my webbrowser, nothing popped up.)  BubbaRAID seems to be working fine, although I'd love to be able to use unMENU's package manager.  If I can install both of these, do I just install both separately, or do I have to edit them so their scripts don't conflict with each other first?

2.  APCUSPD  Ah APCUSPD, how confusing you still are.  I tried to install my APC using the proper cable (940-0127E) in the settings, but it is so new that the script has not been updated to include it yet.  I assumed this would happen, and tried 940-0127B which is supposedly an identical cable.  Unfortunately, although the current build of apcuspd has support for this, apparently the one with bubbaRAID does not :(  So I tried 940-0127A (hey, why not?) to no avail.  Finally, one more try - luckily the 'USB' cable setting seems to give the program the APC data it is looking for (yay)!  One apcuspd problem down, more to go.

2a.  more APCUSPD I noticed that APCUSPD is installed on both BubbaRAID and unMENU.  If i install both, which config file is used?  Do I have to disable one to keep them from tripping over each other?  What's the easiest way to do this?  (I'd prefer the bubbaRAID version to be running if I have a choice)

2b. APCUSPD again.  APCUSPD does not seem to, by default, unmount all drives and perform a 'safe' unRAID shutdown.  (Which makes sense, seeing as how it wasn't designed specifically for unRAID, but modified by helpful unRAID users).  Does the BubbaRAID version fix this and shut down the system properly (can't test it, since I don't have any available hard drives to reformat to use with unRAID on my XP flash setup system)?  I couldn't find any sort of a shutdown script it calls, so unless it was all modified to be included in the apcuspd build, I'm assuming not - if not, how do I fix this?  (presumably by adding a shutdown script, but how to write it properly and call it with however bubbaRAID handles this addon?)

2c.  APCUSPD (last one here)  I would like APCUSPD to email me whenever power is lost, and whenever the machine shuts down because of power loss.  Although BubbaRAID comes with a notify script, it seems geared more toward providing regular status notifications than working with APCUSPD - how do I modify it (or APUSUPD) to email me?  (If it's easier to use unMENU, can it do this?)

3.  Both unMENU and BubbaRAID seem to have various tools for logging and tracking the results of SMART scans and hard drive temperatures/problems - is there any way to use these tools to schedule regular scans and a monthly parity check, or are custom manual cron scripts still the only way to do this?  If so, will the logging tools automatically log the results for these, or will they need editing by me too?

4.  unMENU - is there any way to get the current unMENU to start up on system startup?  (Add a line to the go script I'm guessing?  At the end?  To run 'uu' during startup?)

Sorry if these questions seem a bit silly - I just installed unRAID and BubbaRAID earlier today, so have only been poking at it for 8ish hours so far.  I don't dare install unMENU (yet) to poke at until someone confirms it won't do anything awful to install it to a system with BubbaRAID on it.  Without this forum, I'd NEVER have been able to make unRAID a useful program for me - thanks everyone!  (feel free to just post forum links to relevant answers if it turns out that my forum searching skills have failed me :) )

BubbaRAID doesn't include unMENU although I think it is planned at some point.  They both work fine together, just install both according to their instructions in their threads.  I have both running on my main unRAID server.

Yes, you are correct.  My unMENU is installed in /boot/unmenu as suggest by Joe, I added the following line to the GO script on both my unRAID servers over the weekend:

/boot/unmenu/uu

I don't know about bubbaRAID, but I can try and help you out with unMENU... Many of your questions have entire threads dedicated to helping people and with alot of answers already.  I don't mean to be critical, I'm just pointing out that they might not all be straight-forward.

As you found out, like I did when I was testing APCUPSD, that using the actual cable serial number may not be the best solution.  Using the generic terms is probably a better way to go and allows APCUPSD to figure out exactly which cable it is using.

2a.  Unless they are both installed to different locations(which I do not believe they would be), they will both be installed to the same place, and therefore one would overwrite the other... the one that will actually be "present" in the system is the last of the two to be installed, if there is a difference in versions(?) then you want to make sure that bubbaRAID installs it's verision after unmenu's version.  I don't know enough about bubbaRAID to help you there.  The config file is /etc/apcupsd/apcupsd.conf.

2b.  In order for apcupsd to actually perform a safe shutdown, you need to install WeeboTech's powerdown script, http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2781.0.  Without it, apcupsd cannot perform a safe shutdown.  Once installed I can confirm that apcupsd will perform a safe shutdown.  i have tested this MANY times in trying a variety of configuration of apcupsd (look for the UPS Support? thread) and it worked every time.

2c.  The standard unmenu package for apcupsd will setup APCUPSD for you with e-mail alerts, but you will need to ensure that the e-mail notification script is installed and you have configured it for sending e-mails to you.  You can search the forum to find the information you are looking for. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=3020.0

There are scripts available to do these things on start-up and via cron (by adding the entry for you into cron). Search the forum, you find plenty of these tweaks kicking around.

4.  unMENU - is there any way to get the current unMENU to start up on system startup?  (Add a line to the go script I'm guessing?  At the end?  To run 'uu' during startup?)

yep, exactly right... if you install unmenu to a folder called unmenu on your flash then to run it, the line in the go script would be:

/boot/unmenu/uu

Your questions are not silly, they are pretty common answers.  You will do alot of good for yourself and be much more comfortable with your setup, if you spend some time going through each post I linked.  They contain alot of useful information about the features you are trying to use.

here are a few more:

2a. Note that at least BubbaRAID, works by just making symlinks. So you need to be careful with which path is used etc.

2b. apcupsd in BubbaRAID does use the proper shutdown procedure.

4. right

Do not install any other apcupsd package on top of BubbaRaid.  BubbaRaid has apcupsd built in.

BubbaRaid's implementation of apcupsd does send you e-mails.  If you have properly configured unraid_notify on BubbaRaid, and you get those e-mails, then you should get apcupsd e-mails too.

Just woke up - looking through the post and trying stuff now - I'll edit this if all is well and add a post if I have more questions :)

Edit: BubbaRAID and unMENU are now installed and seem to be playing happily together - I'll now start posting questions I have with either one individually in the appropriate threads.
