XBMC and cloud Mysql (database as a service)

Featured Replies

I figured the lounge was the best place for this topic. So I had an idea the other day and was wondering if anyone has had any experience in this or attempted to do it. I am moving some things around on my setup and need to move the the MySQL database XBMC uses for it's library to a different machine. It occurred to me, since there are places that offer SQL hosting on the cloud, you could use one of those for XBMC instead of having to keep it hosted locally. Has anyone tried this? I am looking into using Amazon's Web Services for this as they offer a free tier plan with limitations. The free tier is valid for a year only though. Does anyone know of any better services for this? Anyone had any experience on attempting to move their XBMC MySQL library to a cloud based host?

XBMC wants to directly query a MySQL database which is not the same as a web service, which is sending an XML SOAP file to a URL and then parsing the XML SOAP response.

Don't get your hopes up too much.

Most webs hosting plans offer MySQL, even the cheapest of the cheapest, so it could be as cheap as a "cloud" service.

My worry would be speed.  I can't imagine library lookups and refreshes being of the speed you need.

Bob, if you want I can setup a hosted MySQL db for you to try your luck on.  Look at it as a little repayment for xbmcsalud which I have been using since day dot and has made my life a little easier.
