[Solved] Windows 8.1 doesn't see my unraid server on the network

Featured Replies

Hello

I just set up my first unraid server and I can't see it in my network places on my windows 8.1 computer (I also tried typing in the name of the server and the ip address into the windows explorer address bar). I can see it and map it as a network drive on my other computer running windows 7. I can also access it from my htpc running xbmcbuntu.

I have network discovery turned on for my windows 8 computer and it can see my other windows computers in network places. I can access the server through the web gui and ping it just fine with the windows 8 computer. All computers are in the same workgroup.

Any ideas of what the problem would be? I am fairly knowledgeable about computers and windows but I don't know much about linux, unraid, or even things that have changed for windows 8 so keep that in mind when providing suggestions.

Thanks a lot for any help you can offer!

After much trial and error and a lot of web research I finally figured out what the problem was. There was at least one service that wasn't starting up when the computer booted up. It was either UPnP Device Host, TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, or both.

(To get to them, right click on my computer, choose manage, click Services and Applications, Services, and then look for those services and make sure they are running. If they are not, start them and then right click on them, choose properties, and then choose automatic from the drop down menu for startup type. Hope this helps someone else).

Thanks for the tip! ;D
