Booting up old PIII 800Mhz

I decided to mess with a old box of mine. About a year ago I got this box running with no problem.

 

I am using a kicker disk since it is a old PIII 800MHz box. I can boot up to the login prompt with no problem. I can login and check & see if I have the USB label set right. It reports back that UNRAID is the label. That's about as far as I can get.

 

I guess the only problem I am having is the network side.

 

I have attached the syslog below. Any help would be appreciated.

Wow!  I have to give you an A for effort, at least!  This old box contains an 800Mhz Pentium III, requires a kicker disk, has problems in its timers, has problems in its PCI bus, has no SATA ports, probably has IDE ports too old to support drives larger than 127GB (which is probably why you added the Promise PCI IDE card), and can't find a NIC (either broken or too old to support)!

 

If it worked before, then the network chipset may either no longer be working, or support for it has been dropped.  The only reasons I can think of, as to why it was dropped, is that it has become too rare to include, or was not very stable to begin with.  Your 2 choices are to add a PCI network card, or go back to the version you say worked before.  ( or perhaps upgrade the motherboard!?!  ;D )

 

It has a number of issues in its PCI support, and I'm not sure I would trust it.  I suspect you will have problems with some PCI cards you may wish to add.

 

Apart from that, I think it could work.

I thought I would play with it in case anyone else wanted to try this..

 

I got the network to work. The network card & the promise IDE controller was trying to use the same interupt. I pulled the IDE controller & all is good. I'm going to try & move the Promise card to a different slot & see.

 

I guess I'm showing my age by using this hardware..  :P

 

If Tom or anyone wants to move this thread, then go for it. It probably belongs in the motherboard forum.

Well I got the Promise & the network card to play together.

 

I got a couple of old IDE drives laying around somewhere. I'll find them & see if I can get them to clear & make an array.

 

I'll post here if I can get everything working..  ;D

I put a old WD 160Gig IDE drive in and played around a bit. I have the box set up on a 10/100 network. I saturated the network copying a Blu-ray iso to it. About 32Gig file. Ran the top command & CPU usage stayed about 43%.

 

I played the Blu-ray iso on my HTPC & had zero dropouts. The movie played smoothly, ran around 30mbps average. Quick chapter skips. Top ran cpu usage in the 4% to 6% range.

 

I have to copy some stuff off of another ide drive so I can test it out with a parity drive installed. Looks like this box may work just fine streaming dvr-ms files to my htpc.

 

Let you know how it runs with a parity drive.

I dismantled this one. The capacitors on the motherboard started to squall. It was giving me a headache..  :P

 

I'm starting another retroRAID box..  ;D

 

I'll post about that one in the lounge.. or maybe in Hardware.
