Replacing failed drive with drive larger than parity - can it be done?

Featured Replies

2TB drive red balled on me.

Tried to replace with 3TB.

Error:

If this is a new array, move the largest disk into the parity slot.

If you are adding a new disk or replacing a disabled disk, try Parity-Swap.

Can this be done?

Yes. But you need another disk that size or greater.

Searched forums, solved.

Unassigned Parity, Assigned new 3TB in its place.

Assigned Old 2TB Parity drive to Disk 1 (previously failed) slot.

Was presented with the option to Copy/Upgrade, doing this now.

Smooth.

It is called parity swap disable. I have not heard of anyone doing this successfully in a while. Please report results.

There is an alternate method but it requires a second drive of the max size.
