lsusb results change when I move devices around

Featured Replies

So, I'm trying to map my USB slots by plugging an external hard drive into all the empty slots, then running lsusb to see where it gets mapped to.

I don't currently have any of my VM's running, so this is all being done with a fresh reboot of unRAID.

The lower-right USB3 slot had my bluetooth dongle plugged in, and lsusb showed me that is was located at Bus 003, Device 005.  I removed the dongle and plugged in the external drive, then lsusb showed me that the drive was located at Bus 004, Device 004.  I then removed the drive, and plugged in my wireless mouse dongle, then lsusb showed me that the mouse dongle was located at Bus 003, Device 010.

So, 3 devices in the same slot gave me 3 different results, including 2 different Bus ID's, and 3 different Device ID's.

I was hoping that my mapping of the USB slots would let me figure out which slots went with which buses and then I could know which I could pass thru to the VM's.

It seems this isn't possible; or am I doing it wrong?
