Replacement Motherboard to Pair with i3-3220

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm helping a friend who started building an unraid server last year but never finished. Returning to the project, the system is dead. Through process of elimination the PSU is confirmed OK, which leaves the motherboard or CPU. My hunch is that the CPU is ok and the motherboard is the issue. There is absolutely zero life in the system currently - not a light or fan at all.

My plan (and I'm open to alternatives) is to find a replacement motherboard to swap into the system. If it turns out the CPU is broken, I'll have to buy another.

So I'm wondering - can anyone advise me on a motherboard that will work ok with an i3-3220 - and I would really like one that has 8 x sata ports.

I'm in the UK and several of the models listed on this forum I've not been able to find at the likes of:

http://ebuyer.com

http://aria.co.uk

http://dabs.com

I know the i3-3220 is a 1155 socket, but after that it gets into chipsets and I'm all a bit lost. Add to this the seeming inability to search by number of sata sockets has made life even harder!

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks!

Virtually any Socket 1155 board will work fine.  Most of them have 6 SATA ports, although a few have an additional JMicron controller that supports 2 more devices, such as the Asus P8P67 Deluxe.  The chipset really doesn't matter -- you don't need the extra overclocking or PCIe channels that a Z series chipset provides, so the inexpensive H or B series chipsets are fine.    For what you need here, I'd just buy something like this:  http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Motherboards/Intel+Socket/Socket+1155+-+Intel+B75/GIGABYTE+GA-B75M-D3H+Intel+B75+%28Socket+1155%29+Micro-ATX+Motherboard+?productId=50696

But if you really want 8 SATA ports, you could buy this:  http://www.dabs.com/products/asus-p8p67-deluxe-rev-3-0-lga1155-intel-p67-ddr3-atx--b3-stepping--7D9W.html?refs=469740000&src=3  [but be sure your case supports ATX boards if you do that -- the board above is MicroATX, but this Asus board is a full ATX board]

The AsRock board Ford Prefect suggested is an excellent choice -- and has the 8 ports you're looking for as well  :)

Thank-you ever so much. Really appreciated! The ASRock it is!
