How do you install screen from this? Can I just put those files into plugin directory in config like other plugins?

you should be able to put them in the extra folder and will be installed during a restart or installpkg from command line

Thanks, that worked! Why does it have to be in /boot/extra though? All my other plugins are in /boot/config/plugins .

Because only plg files get auto-installed from plugin folders. txz/tgz files are auto-installed from extra before any plugins. See here
