Removing sata drives not in the array?

I have an external enclosure attached to my server via esata that I plan on using for preclearing new drives. Would like to find out what I need to do to attach/detach external drives. Will hot swapping work ok? Should I shutdown the array first before shutting down the external enclosure? The external disk is not in the array.
