(Solved) Sanity check - 1st parity errors

Featured Replies

Hi. I have just updated my server. I first upgraded my parity disk to 4TB after doing a pre clear for 3 cycles, no errors. I then updated a data disk with a 4TB drive, again after 3 pre clear cycles. All seemed fine, no errors, all smart reports showing all ok and no changes during any of the activites - all good :-)

So last nigh my monthly parity check ran and it shows 540 errors on the parity drive, but on the array main screen it shows 0 errors? The syslog also shows errors being generated close to the end of the drive ( assuming its the end as it was close to the end of the parity check. I have double checked all of the smart reports, no realloocated sectors, none pending etc, all looks clean. The syslog start the check with "No Correct" is this right, i though setting it off in the new versions was a correcting parity check unless you specified differently?

Attached syslog & a sheet showing errors and comment from main array tab showing no errors.

So before i jump in and do something >  do i have errors or not and what should be the next step - run another parity check? clear statistics and then do another one or run a correcting parity check from unmenu?

If it were me I'd run a non-correcting check and compare the locations of the errors, if you get the same errors twice in a row and all the smart reports on the drives are clean I'd just run a correcting check and be done with it. If you get different errors the second time, then stop, collect all the logs and smart reports you can, and post here with the results. If you still have the data disk that you upgraded to the 4TB, you could do binary file compares to see if you find any corruption. If the data is super important, then compare to your backups. If you don't have backups, then obviously the data isn't that important anyway.

Thank you - none correcting check now in progress.

I am still confused with the results of the last check saying no errors and the array operations tab showing 540 errors - there are errors or there are not errors, which is it !! given the results in the syslog does anyone know why the main screen was showing completed with no errors ?

Will report back with results of none correcting check

Two kinds of errors. And I am pretty sure that unRaid would not allow a read error to generate a parity error.

See THIS POST for a detailed explanation.

Interesting we've seen a rash of issues with read errors and parity mismatches on the forums. Wondering why.

Thanks for the info so far.

I ran the none correcting parity check and it reported no errors? So do i just do nothing or is there a next step. Still not 100% what has gone on but seems there are currentoly no errors and i checked all of the drive smart reports again and they all look to be fine.

Odd, but a little relieved at the result of the check

Look at the reallocated sector count in the smart report (the raw value in the far righthand column).  What is it? Also post the smart report so I can take a look.

Attached is the output for all of the disks. The 2 new ones are 4tb and are parity and 1 data disk, the others have been running for a couple of years on and off. From the reports i see nothing in pending sectors or reallocated sectors.

Not sure what went on with the monthly parity check it just seems the errors being indicated on the main array page and the read errors in the syslog are not there now. Not comfortable when things just happen and then go away !

Thanks for the help so far

Not had further feedback on my Smart reports but from what I have read the key points are OK on all of the drives and the "none correcting check" found no errors so putting it down to a phase of the moon, marking as solved and will see how the next check goes at the end of the month. Server seems to be working normally.

Thanks for the input and advice, always appreciated
