June 22, 201412 yr Tried originally with Unraid 5.0, since upgraded to 5.0.5. Using the latest preclear script. WD Red 3tb drive. I have 1 3tb red parity and 1 3tb data drive already working in an array. Just as the topic states, I am unable to add a new drive to my array. I have tried doing via the web ui, stopping the array, adding it and allowing Unraid to clear it. I'll check on it the next morning, in the drop box the description of the drive has changed. When I select it in the drop box, it immediately unchecks itself. Similar results using the preclear script. Looks like everything goes as expected until the end, I'm met with the following message SORRY: Disk /dev/sdb MBR could NOT be precleared == == out4= 00000 == out5= 00000 Full output here http://pastebin.com/u1H0wnwe When I look at my disc in the Web UI now, it looks like this Am I doing something wrong? Is my bios set up incorrectly? Do I have a bad disc? Please give me a hand Edit: Computer Information. ASRock B75 PRO3-M Motherboard Using SATA ports on the motherboard. June 22, 201412 yr A little bit more information about your system would be helpful. When that (unable to preclear a drive) happened to me I was trying to preclear the drive on my server and the drive was connected to a SAS expander and an M1015. In order to fix the preclear problem I had to update the firmware on my M1015 and SAS expander to newer firmware's. As to why it displays in unRAID that way - I can't tell you - sorry. So my suggestion is look for firmware updates to your devices and bios and see if that helps. But more system info might help someone else better diagnose the problem for you.
June 22, 201412 yr Author Like an amateur, I restarted my server before copying the log. I updated my bios and attempting again. If it fails I will post a complete log. Won't be untill tomorrow though. Server info is being added to the opening post. Thanks for the quick replys
June 23, 201412 yr Author I checked the log about 8 hours in and was already seeing errors. attached is the log. http://pastebin.com/jHvYSSzU
June 23, 201412 yr Author I have not run a memtest. 1. What is the simplest accomplish this? 2. What makes you think that memory is the issue?
June 23, 201412 yr I have not run a memtest. 1. What is the simplest accomplish this? 2. What makes you think that memory is the issue? memtest is in the boot menu. You have to have a monitor and keyboard attached to see and select this boot option. Another thing to try would be booting in safe mode to eliminate any problems caused by plugins. Safe mode is also on the boot menu.
June 23, 201412 yr Author I ran the memory tests 3x through and it passed. My server is mission critical tonight, so I decided to boot UNRAID on a second PC I have in the basement and give preclear a run there. Hoping to have better success. Will know in the morning. Thanks again for all the help.
June 24, 201412 yr Author The drive also failed to clear on my second computer. It was a fresh install, no addons enabled. Attached is the syslog, all zipped up. Please have a look and let me know what it means. Do I have a bad drive or is something else going on? https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20874890/syslog.zip
June 24, 201412 yr My log foo is not great. But it is definitely having problems with that drive. As to what is causing it I really couldn't say since I don't know how to interpret the log messages you got. Can you post the smart report for the drive as well. Instructions for smartctl are here: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Console#smartctl

Do I have a bad drive or is something else going on? https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20874890/syslog.zip If you have tried to preclear the drive on a different computer with a new install it certainly points towards a faulty WD Red 3TB Hard Drive. Out of the 20 I have, 5 of them were DOA and 1 failed after 1 year and the of the 2 x 4TB Reds I have, 1 of them was DOA. They are great drives in general but do have a high DOA rate, probably caused in transit to the UK. You can rule out SATA cables etc as its a different machine. I presume the fresh install is on a different USB key. But even if it is not then its unlikely to be a key issue as you have 1 data and 1 parity already running fine. I would point towards a faulty Hard Drive but Im sure a more experienced user can help you by reading your syslog.
June 24, 201412 yr Author I really do appreciate all the help I'm receiving, and quickly to boot! SMART report: http://pastebin.com/23sudAVu Anyone care to chime in?
June 24, 201412 yr With the problems you have had I would RMA the drive. Don't see any pending or reallocated sectors and the Raw Read Errors are not on the list of smart settings to worry about. But I wouldn't like having any (Raw Read Errors) especially with the other problems you've had.
June 24, 201412 yr Although Im fairly new to unRAID I have read up quite a lot about Hard Drive issues. JoeL has some really good info on reading preclear reports and I agree with Bob, if it was me I would RMA the drive.
June 24, 201412 yr Author I have taken all the suggestions and RMAed the drive. I am still running a long SMART test on it before it goes out the door. This thread will remain open, I will reply when I get my new drive to give this issue some closure. Thank you all again for helping me troubleshoot the issue.
July 9, 201411 yr Author New drive arrived yesterday. I was successful in preclearing the new drive, added it to the array and in the middle of formatting it. The issue appears to have been a bad drive. Thanks again for all the help.
