Featured Replies

Hi everyone

im trying to pre clear a new 4tb drive, the hdd is connected to a sata pcie card, this one :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Syba-SATA-Controller-Profile-Brackets/dp/B00AZ9T3OU/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1403556508&sr=1-2&keywords=Syba+SATA+III+4+Port+PCI-e+x1+Controller+Card+with+Low+Profile+Brackets

when i start the pre clear through putty it just hangs at 0%

i get this error on the webui tower:8080    Buffer I/O error on device sdg, logical block 192842

i have checked all cables swapped sata cable and power

i dont understand the sys log or linux much could it be a driver problem?

does anyone have any ideas what the problem is any help is really appreciated

thank you Craig

Can you try preclearing on an onboard sata port?

Sent from a mobile device, sorry for any typos.

hi thanks for your help

i just tried from on board sata and its still hanging at 0%

heres a new sys log

could it be a faulty drive?

I'd be curious (if possible), to see if you tried it on the mobo controller port, but without that controller card in it at all.  Even if other drives are on it, the array simply shouldn't start, just be sure not to assign, etc.  The preclear script will still run (perhaps not finish if it is indeed the drive itself).

Reading some posts on the forums where that card was involved, it seemed like many people experienced dropped drives, hanging drives, etc. even when those drives weren't on that card itself.  That strikes me as odd and I would draw into question the controller itself.  Albeit, it could of course be the drive.

I'll try to pre clear again with the sata card removed when I get in after work. Was any of the other post with this card solved?

Thanks for the help

hi

Well since trying what you suggested by removing the pcie card and plugging straight into the motherboard port the hdd showed in the webui as unassigned and when clicking the drop down box were the drive details would usually be there was nothing there and  when trying to pre clear no hdd was seen, now when i did a shut down and put the hdd back on the pcie card unraid would not boot.

when trying to log in from putty it told me unraid didn`t exist, i spent 2 hours messing thinking i had corrupt the  data on the flash drive somehow

by chance i heard that the hdd was making a quite grinding noise so i unplugged it and unraid went back to normal and booted straight away

so i guess the drive was doa but is that normal for unraid not to even boot if a drive is faulty?

thanks for the help im going to try hdd in windows pc before returning.

Edit:  hdd is dead returning tomorrow, still curious to knw if a faulty hdd would cause unraid not boot
