the system is going down for system halt now

Featured Replies

I noticed my server was shut down here at work and it was on not too long ago...So I booted it up and it said was an unclean shut down and it automatically started a parity check. I telnet into the server to check something out that was unrelated and then i got the messed on the command prompt

the system is going down for system halt now
. and now the system is off. I havent turned it back on yet. Any ideas? Everytime you reboot the syslog gets recreated correct? Thanks

Update: I was trying to delete some folders if that helps any...I think im running v4.7 on here maybe I should install latest version...

Without the syslog it's hard to understand what is happening, and as you mentioned, the syslog gets recreated on each boot.

It's possible the computer is shutting down due to a heat issue, in which case the parity check will cause issues as all drives are worked and will be generating extra heat. Otherwise it could be a hardware fault causing this.

If you can monitor the server and determine it's not heat (or hardware), then I would look at upgrading to 5.0.5 without plugins and see if the issue goes away.

I would suggest 2 things:

1) if you can get 4.7 back up take a screen shot of your devices so you know which is parity and cache (if applicable). 5.0 will allow you to stick the drives anywhere as it uses drive ID for identifying rather than disk location (i.e. which SATA connection you are plugged into).

2) I don't know how many drives you are running, or what plugins you have, but if you are able to it might be worth trying to boot up with a clean 5.0.5 USB (if you have a Plus/Pro key I would zip up your current config, reformat and start the USB fresh with your license key), or if you have just a basic license then just start with a new key to test without wiping out your old one.

Once up with 5.0.5 configure your array and see if it's stable. It will prompt you to redo the parity check, which you can either let complete or stop and see if your system is stable for a bit first. If it's stable, then try the parity check and monitor the drive temps as it works.

Once you appear stable you can look at adding plugins back one at a time. Since you were on 4.7 there are likely new editions of most plugins since you configured your array. Also, stay away from SimpleFeatures as 5.0 doesn't support it. You can try Dynamix and/or UnMENU if you want a GUI addon.

thanks bkastner. Ill look into heat issues and try to rule out hardware and ill take everything else you said into consideration. ill report back when theres something to report. thanks

Ok so its not over heating of the CPU...its not PSU its not RAM. So i decided lets start fresh on the UNraid os with the latest. Not doing it as an upgrade but clean start over. Oh by the way the main reason i decided this was not because of the shut down but a problem i had a few months back came back where it showed a red dot on one of my drives and i tried new drive and new cables and a different port and it remained then kinda went away on its own basically.

so now i want to start fresh on the flash drive... I backed up the drive and download the latest 5.0.5 i believe and fired computer back up only attached the data drives and looked all data appeared to be there. then i added the parity drive and it recreated that and all data still seems to be fine. no more red dot. hasnt shut down yet. is there a way i can recreate my shares? I dont know if I just manually redo it? I just dont want to lose my data. thanks.

ps..i do see the names of the shares when i go to disk 1 and disk 2 but they dont come up as a normal created share

If you made a backup of your original config you can copy shares.cfg from the config folder and then once you reboot your shares will be back. Otherwise you need to manually create them. As long as the share names are the same it will match up to the folders on your drives and everything will be visible again.

thanks bkastner...thats what I was thinking...or hoping anyways...so i did what you said and the shares are there. however there is no data there...the data is fine once i navigate to it through disk1 and disk2 so in webgui i went to settings then share settings and added disk1 and disk2 and rebooted but still no data in the shares. Thoughts? thanks again!

So I came into work this morning and the parity drive was unassigned and the disk2 wasnt listed and I cant reassign disk 2 it just says missing..here is the syslog.

I have an extra drive that I can use to replace disk2 its the same size but with parity drive not assigned im not sure what to do...

sorry about double posting log

That is strange. The share names are identical (or copied from your original shares.cfg file)?

If you don't specify any disks in the include/exclude then all disks are accessible to that share.

What happens if you copy a new file/folder into the share name? See if you can figure out where it ends up.

Hrmm.... okay, there are definitely issues in the syslog that don't look good, but I would ask someone better versed in syslog contents to provide their insight. The biggest problem is that without the parity disk there you have 2 missing disks, which means anything on disk2 could potentially be lost, unlees you can get the parity drive up and running again.

You mention you can't re-add disk2. Can you re-add the parity drive successfully?

The share names are identical to the upper and lower case letters. I copied the shares.cfg from the original file and rebooted.

I CAN add the parity but i didnt want to touch anything but when i go to add disk2 it says no device and shows that it is missing and i choose the drop down list and the drive is not there only the parity drive is there...should i readd the parity? Will i lose whats one disk2 if i readd the parity? thanks

I would recommend trying to get data off disk 2 before doing anything with parity. You don't know that the parity drive is good at this point in time.

Sent from a mobile device, sorry for any typos.

How can I do that? Windows wont read the disk will it?

If it's not even showing up on the list of disks then either there is a cabling issue, or else the disk is potentially dead. I would power down the machine, re-check the cables for the disk and reboot. First, make sure the BIOS sees the disk and then let's see if UnRAID can see the disk.

I tried different cables in different ports and that got it working...for now anyways. thanks!! I started the array WITHOUT the parity drive and data is there. I see the shares but like before they are empty....data can only be found on disk1 and disk2. I have my server hooked up to a monitor and everytime i try to access a share i get error messages...

REISERFS error (device md2) and so on...here is a new syslog...remember I have not added the Parity yet

PS. I will be out of town for a couple weeks so i might not be able to respond after this post for a while. thanks

Since disk2 has caused issues I would suggest trying to copy everything off of it while it's still up (assuming you have the space elsewhere). Once you know your data is safe you have more options to test when you are back online.

I am going to try and copy all the data off the server and 100% redo the flash drive and recreate all the shares. The thing with disk2 is its inconsistent. Ive tried new disk tried new cables and even a new port. im getting tired of trying to trouble shoot it all so just going to start over. Thanks for all the help!
