June 29, 201412 yr So, while I'm fairly up to date with computers but virtualization is something I haven't really played with before. I plan to start buying the remaining hardware I need to put together another tower next week but I need to clarify the software side first and make sure everything I get works. There's a plethora of posts in here about it but I'm afraid I did not get from point A to point B. The tower will have a new quad core in it and will be participating in boinc (research using distributed computing for those who don't participate). I want to leave one core and a good chunk of ram for unraid. I think (and I could be wrong) that the boinc portion should be the host. However what type of VM, etc, is something I'm not sure about. I will be using supermicro add on cards for more drive capacity, and the mb/cpu combo are both vt-d capable. The tower will run some flavor of linux (probably influenced by what manner of VM is used). Ease of setup is not a primary concern as it will force me to learn by doing. Once it's up and running however I'd obviously like it run smoothly with minimal interaction. I also need to know if performing updates on the OS would interfere with the in any way/require work to keep things smooth. I also might not be asking a question that I don't know I need to ask. Can anyone point me in a good direction? Thanks, Yankton
June 30, 201412 yr Sounds like you intend to run unRAID as a guest. unRAID 6 (still in beta) can be the virtual host. I am successfully running boinc in a VM with unRAID 6beta5a as the host. Haven't gotten around to trying the latest beta yet.
July 1, 201412 yr Author The thread you linked to is marked deprecated but I'll go through it and see if there is a newer one. I assumed that the os used for boinc should be the host but as I said I have minimal experience with VMs. Seeing as you are doing what I aim to though you're help is greatly appreciated.

The thread was only deprecated yesterday because the OP doesn't have time to continue to invest, and Docker is the preferred path for most plugins in version 6.0. Many of us though are still running VMs based on IronicBadgers images to handle a number of functions.
