July 1, 201412 yr So I am building an unraid server for the first time. I would like to be able to do some light vm work on it. I thought it would be good to post my build and see it there were any potential problems. Case: LIAN LI PC-Q25B http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112339 Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-H97N-WIFI LGA 1150 Intel H97 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128721 Processor: Intel Core i5-4460 Haswell Quad-Core 3.2GHz LGA 1150 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117302 RAM: G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231558 Hard Drive: 256 GB SSD (for VM's and later as a possible cache drive) 2x3TB HDD (with another one to move once the files are on the unraid) Power Supply: a 500W one I already have I'm hoping to order later today or tomorrow. Let me know if you see any problems.
July 1, 201412 yr Which power supply specifically? Power can be very important when you have multiple drives spinning and some PSUs are not recommended.
July 1, 201412 yr Author It's a CORSAIR CX430. Which means its 430 watts. For some reason I remembered 500. It was something I had around. I don't want to buy a new one if I don't have to, especially right off the bat. I do plan on adding more hard drives at about the 6 month mark and when I can catch them on sale. If I need to update maybe then.
July 1, 201412 yr Single 12v rail, so that PSU should be OK. Should be plenty of watts for the number of drives you can put in that case. An SFX form-factor power supply would give you a little more room in the case though.
July 18, 201411 yr How is your build going? I'm looking at this board for a new build and curious to hear your thoughts. Not sure if it's on your radar but it does appear to support VT-d (there's a bios setting for it).
July 18, 201411 yr Author I have my unraid up and running. It has a couple of docker programs running. I haven't yet tried any virtualization. I do plan to run one or maybe two instances or ArchLinux. Haven't had any problems at all with the hardware. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
