Buying unraid (today)... what size USB? Can I use a SD adapter instead?

Featured Replies

Planning to buy the 2 license deal for unraid Pro today (anyone want to buy the other??)

A couple questions:

I intend to run some of the modifications or add-ons like BubbaQ's package....  what is the max USB flash drive size I can/should run?  And could I use an SD card adapter for the GUID instead of binding it to a specific USB drive? (in case I want to use a bigger usb drive for the OS later)

Thanks!

I would try booting the basic version of unRAID of the the USB adapter first.  If that works and the GUID is present in the unraid main page then you might, i say might be.  I have no idea how the SD card and adapter will "work" and whether it will be reliable.

As for size, I would probably go for something in the 1Gb or 2GB range.  You really don't need anything bigger and that size drive is about normal now.

1G or 2G is likely plenty big.

But if I were buying one today, I'd likely go with 2G or even 4G.  With some of the community initiatives, it might be possible that a larger stick would come in handy in the future.  And hey, the price difference isn't very much.

I doubt the SD would have a GUID.  But you can boot it and see.

You can go with a 2G SD card if you have a card reader for it.

I have 2 unRAID licenses with 2GB Kingston SD cards and they work fine.

You can try this one out. I know the card itself works. I use a different card reader. But I use this card.

I've gotten this one to work However, it's been hit and miss with the motherboard.

It could be the way I formatted it.

It works. I have 2 of them that work.

But let me clarify

could I use an SD card adapter for the GUID instead of binding it to a specific USB drive? (in case I want to use a bigger usb drive for the OS later)

For this question, the GUID is tied to the SD Card, not the adapter.

So you would not be able to upgrade to a larger card without a new key from Lime Technology.

Now about the size, For this application I would go with a 2G.

"usually" anything larger is SDHC unless you check into it.

I do have a 4G regular SD cards that are not SDHC but I have not seen them around any more.

FWIW, I have used this cheesy style card reader with success (on a few different machines).

It's capable of SDHC.
