Help with installing unRAID basic

Featured Replies

I am trying to get unRAID Basic running on my server and I am having a problem.

When I boot from the flash, it stops at the following lines and then asks me to enter the Tower login

/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf: line 18: /boot/config/network.cfg: No such file or directory

/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf: line 19: /var/tmp/network.cfg: No such file or directory

I have a feeling that this might be due to my motherboard. This is the motherboard that I have: Asrock 939SLI32-eSATA2. I know that the best boards are the ones with intel chipsets, but I had already purchased this board before I came across unRAID.

Any help would be appreciated.

Those messages indicate the driver for your network i/f are not loaded.

We have just limited experience with AMD-based m/b's.  We recently made a release for a customer that may or may  not help.

It's "3.1-beta1b" available one the downloads page.

Also in looking at your m/b, it uses Realtek RTL8111B chip, which should be supported by current unRAID Server.  One thing you might try is login as username 'root' (no password), and type this command:

  modprobe r1000

This will try to force the driver to load.  Tell me what happens when you try this.

Hi.  I am the AMD guy that he is referring to.  I got those same errors, and the problem was my usb memory stick.  The computer would boot off of it, but then Linux was not able to mount the USB stick.  I got one of the recommended ones, the SanDisk Cruzer Micro, and that fixed the problem.  - Jeff

Well the problem seems to be more widespread. When I first started I was using an old PNY 256MB flash drive that I had lying around. That is when I got the error messages described in my first post, but at least it was booting from the flash. I then tried the Lexar Firefly and Sandisk Micro. However, with both it just refuses to boot. I can select them as a boot device in my bios, but it just doesn't want to boot from it. I get the following error:

Reboot and Select proper Boot device

or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key

So I then decided to try unRAID on my HTPC, which has a motherboard with an intel chipset (Asus P4P800-VM). Well with the Lexar it boots from the usb loads everything and then asks the tower to login. I then look for the server, by typing in \\tower in IE, and it cannot find the server. I then login as root and try to ping another computer (using 'ping 192.168.1.111') and it tells me that the network is not reachable. I know this has nothing to do with my switch or router because both computers have windows and I have no problems with my internet, etc. The Sandisk won't even boot and give me the same error as my server shown above. The PNY boots but then fails with the same error as described in my first post.

If anyone can help please chime in. I really want unRAID to work, it is a great concept, and a great solution for home file serving.

To summarize:

Server

PNY: Boots but error described in first post

Lexar: Does not boot at all, get error message above

Sandisk: Does not boot at all, get error message above

HTPC:

PNY: Boots but error described in first post

Lexar: Boots but cannot connect to network

Sandisk: Does not boot at all, get error message above

If anyone is interested the manual for my server motherboard can be found here:

Success!!!

I was finally able to boot from my Lexar Firefly on my server. As far as I can tell the reason I was not able to boot because I was formatting the flash with FAT32 file system. When I formatted the flash with FAT, it worked right away. It successfully connected to my network and I am currently trying to activate the array.

I am going to keep my fingers crossed. I have started with only 2 of my 4 400GB disks, and I will add one more and test it out. If everything goes well then I will be upgrading to the Pro version soon.
