No video card prevents system startup

Featured Replies

If I take my video card out, unRAID won't boot up. Is that normal? Am i doing something wrong, or does it require a video card?

unRAID does not require one but your motherboard might.  You can try looking in the BIOS options to see if that can be disabled.

Try pressing the <F1> key.  If that works, then you need to find the BIOS setting mentioned above, something like "Halt on Any/None/Keyboard only Errors", and change it to not halt for anything.

But as he said, there are a few motherboards that require a video card, even if you don't have a monitor attached.

thanks y'all. I'll try this out and let you know how it goes with my A8n-SLI mobo.

looks like it's a no-go for headless. All of the halt options don't ignore video card, so I'm stuck. I'll look into a cheap fanless solution.

Just look for a cheap, old, PCI based card.  They are almost always fanless and that way you are not using up a precious PCI-E slot.  Check craigslist and ebay, you can probably find one for $10.
